In a deeply tragic development coming from Preet Nagar in Pathankot, a newlywed woman died under mysterious and suspicious circumstances just a month and a half after tying the knot. The deceased has been identified as 25-year-old Seema, whose marriage took place on September 5 with Amit Kumar, a resident of Jammu. The sudden and shocking demise has sent shockwaves through the local community, prompting grief and outrage among relatives who are now demanding immediate and stringent justice from local law enforcement authorities.
Heavy Allegations of Dowry Harassment and Mental Torture
According to the statement given to the police by the deceased woman’s brother, Ashwani Kumar, the family had arranged the wedding according to their capacity, even taking on a debt of approximately three lakh rupees to fulfill wedding expenses. However, the grieving family alleged that shortly after the wedding, Seema began facing continuous taunts and harassment over inadequate dowry. The victim’s husband, Amit Kumar, and sister-in-law (nanad), Deepika, allegedly subjected her to severe mental and physical pressure, demanding additional funds and valuables from her parental home, which left Seema deeply distressed.
Escalating Disputes and Final Phone Call Before Tragedy
Family members revealed that tensions escalated significantly on October 7 following a fierce altercation over dowry demands, after which Seema was reportedly ousted from her marital home, forcing her to return to her maternal residence in Pathankot. Despite family attempts to mediate and reconcile the differences, peace could not be restored. The tragic tipping point allegedly arrived on the night of October 21 around 11:00 PM, when Amit Kumar placed a contentious phone call to Seema, leading to a heated argument that pushed the young woman to the brink of despair.
Police Action, Investigation, and FIR Registration
On the following morning of October 22 around 7:00 AM, Seema locked herself inside her room and was subsequently found hanging from the ceiling fan. Upon discovering the grim situation, panic ensued, and local authorities were immediately notified. Police teams arrived at the scene, secured the premises, and shifted the body to the mortuary for a post-mortem examination. Based on the formal complaint lodged by Ashwani Kumar, the police have registered an FIR against the husband Amit Kumar and sister-in-law Deepika at the concerned local police station, and further rigorous investigations are currently underway.
