Understanding the Fake Diwali Bonus Phishing Threat
As the festive season approaches, cybercriminals have ramped up their malicious activities, targeting unsuspecting citizens through sophisticated phishing scams. A viral WhatsApp message promising an attractive Rs 8,000 Diwali bonus from the Prime Minister has been circulating widely across messaging platforms. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) along with cyber security authorities has flagged this viral claim as completely fake. Fraudsters are exploiting the festive spirit to lure individuals into clicking malicious links designed to steal personal and financial credentials. Authorities have strongly advised citizens to remain vigilant and refrain from engaging with these fraudulent messages.
How the Fraudulent Scheme Operates
The scam operates by tricking recipients into believing that the Central Government is distributing special monetary gifts for the festival. The WhatsApp message contains a suspicious URL that directs users to a fake website mimicking official government portals. Once on the deceptive site, victims are prompted to input sensitive details, including bank account numbers, UPI PINs, and personal identification data. In some cases, victims are lured into downloading unauthorized third-party applications or paying fake processing fees, resulting in immediate financial losses and severe data compromise.
Critical Steps If You Have Interacted With the Link
Falling trap to a cyber scam can be stressful, but taking immediate corrective actions can mitigate further damage. If you have mistakenly clicked on the phishing link, you should immediately contact your bank’s official customer support to secure your accounts. Change your net banking passwords, mobile banking PINs, and UPI credentials instantly. If any malicious application was downloaded onto your device, uninstall it right away and disconnect from the internet to prevent remote access. Furthermore, ensure you warn your contacts who may have received the forwarded message from you.
What to Do If You Lost Money and Reporting Guidelines
For individuals who have suffered financial losses due to this fraudulent scheme, swift reporting is essential. Victims should immediately dial the national cybercrime helpline number, 1930, to register their complaint and block fraudulent transactions. Additionally, complaints can be filed online through the official National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in. It is vital to preserve all evidence, including screenshots of the WhatsApp message, transaction IDs, and communication logs, to assist law enforcement agencies in their investigation. Misleading government benefit messages can also be reported directly to the PIB Fact Check unit.
