Punjab witnessed a powerful mix of faith, development, and activism this week. Moreover, the week’s events reflected the state’s unity and resilience. This feature highlights some of Punjab’s most important moments.
The Parkash Purb of Guru Nanak Dev Ji filled the state with devotion and peace. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann led prayers for prosperity and harmony. In addition, he appealed to both India and Pakistan to reopen trade routes and reconnect people across borders.
Meanwhile, the state achieved a major milestone in infrastructure. CM Mann inaugurated the long-awaited Shahpurkandi Dam project worth ₹3,394 crore. Originally launched 26 years ago, the project will soon irrigate 1.18 lakh hectares of farmland. Officials aim to complete the powerhouse section by March 2026. Consequently, the dam will strengthen Punjab’s agriculture and boost hydroelectric power generation.
However, farmers continued to face serious challenges. Authorities are investigating paddy smuggling from Rajasthan into flood-affected districts, especially Fazilka. Additionally, many farmers said they were stopped from selling their produce in nearby states. The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) demanded free DAP fertilizer, withdrawal of stubble-burning FIRs, and fair flood compensation. Encouragingly, stubble-burning incidents fell to 2,518 between September 15 and November 3, compared to 4,132 last year. This shows improvement, yet concerns remain.
Education also took center stage. At Panjab University, students protested the Centre’s proposal to change its governing structure. Former CM Charanjit Singh Channi and MP Simranjit Mann supported their cause. Meanwhile, Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains urged colleges to organize seminars on Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings. Unfortunately, a violent incident also occurred when police arrested a BSc student for attacking a professor who refused him late entry to a mid-term test.
Law and administration developments made news as well. Police detained the son of late SAD MP Zora Singh Mann in a violent case. Furthermore, vigilance officers recovered property papers during fresh raids. A court cleared former minister Anmol Gagan Maan and three AAP leaders in a 2021 protest case. To streamline governance, the Housing Department launched a 60-day Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to accelerate colony development licenses. Finally, Punjab began preparations to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Teg Bahadur in Anandpur Sahib.
