Background
A group of former Indian diplomats has sharply criticized the death sentence issued against former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The ruling was delivered by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal in her absence. The tribunal accused Hasina of human rights violations linked to student-led unrest that shook the country in 2024.
According to the diplomats, the verdict not only lacks legal legitimacy but also signals a dangerous shift in Bangladesh’s political environment.
Questions Over Tribunal’s Legitimacy
Former Indian High Commissioner Vina Sikri questioned the legal authority of the tribunal. She emphasized that the tribunal was originally established to prosecute individuals involved in the 1971 war-crimes, not elected leaders from modern political events. She argued that stretching its mandate to indict a former prime minister raises serious concerns about legality, fairness, and constitutional compliance.
Allegations of Political Vendetta
Several diplomats stated that the verdict appears politically motivated.
Former Ambassador Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty referred to the decision as a “pre-planned political vendetta,” suggesting that the interim government may be using judicial mechanisms to target Hasina. Other diplomats highlighted that the trial process lacked transparency, and the absence of Hasina during the proceedings further questions the fairness of the judgement.
Former Ambassador Rajiv Dogra defended India’s decision to provide refuge to Hasina, stating that she is an important political figure whose party played a key role in shaping Bangladesh’s democratic direction. He added that targeting her now threatens the nation’s political stability.
Concerns About Bangladesh’s Stability
Former diplomats expressed deep worry about the long-term consequences of this verdict.
According to them, the decision could intensify polarization, provoke social unrest, and destabilize Bangladesh’s political climate. They fear that the nation may once again enter a cycle of protests, crackdown, and volatile governance that risks both its democracy and its regional relationships.
India’s Stance
India has maintained a cautious position. Officials reiterated that India is committed to promoting peace, stability, and democratic values in Bangladesh. India also emphasized the importance of inclusive dialogue and political reconciliation for the long-term well-being of the Bangladeshi people.
