Amazon and FluxGen Partner to Launch Major Water Conservation Initiative at NCL Pune Campus

Amazon India has announced a strategic collaboration with Bengaluru-based water technology start-up FluxGen to deploy a comprehensive, integrated water conservation project at the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) campus in Pune. Spanning the entire 380-acre research complex, the project is designed to tackle urban water scarcity by leveraging modern technology to optimize usage, capture runoff, and replenish local aquifers. Scheduled for completion by the end of this year, the initiative represents a significant step forward in sustainable resource management within large academic and research institutions.

Advanced Infrastructure Aimed at Replenishing 178 Million Liters Annually

Once fully operational, the integrated system is projected to replenish an estimated 178 million liters of water each year across the NCL campus. The project relies on a multi-pronged technical strategy designed to target every stage of the campus water lifecycle. Smart IoT sensors will monitor consumption patterns in real time, while water-efficient fixtures—including advanced aerators and waterless urinals—will be installed to significantly curb wastage. Additionally, the infrastructure incorporates robust rainwater harvesting networks, graywater capture, and specialized groundwater recharge structures to ensure maximum retention of natural precipitation.

Setting a Replicable Benchmark for Institutional Campuses

Leaders from the participating organizations highlighted the project’s potential to serve as a national model for sustainable infrastructure. Karan Chugh, Director of Operations at Amazon India, emphasized that the NCL campus provides an ideal environment to demonstrate how technology-driven interventions can operate at scale across corporate offices, healthcare facilities, and educational institutes nationwide. Kanika Goel, Controller of Administration at NCL, noted that combining scientific research with practical sustainability tools aligns with NCL’s mission to deliver real-world societal benefits. FluxGen CEO Ganesh Shankar further observed that integrating diverse water management tools into a single ecosystem turns the campus into a living demonstration of water security.

Youth Education and Experiential Learning Planned for 2027

Beyond physical infrastructure, the partnership establishes a dedicated community outreach and education arm set to roll out in 2027. Designed to foster environmental stewardship among younger generations, the initiative will feature quarterly campus visits for students to gain hands-on exposure to smart water technologies. The program will also support the creation of water conservation clubs in nearby schools and introduce “HydroQuest,” an interactive educational board game crafted to teach core principles of water conservation.

Strengthening Amazon’s Broader Water Stewardship Footprint in India

This initiative reinforces Amazon’s ongoing commitment to corporate environmental responsibility in India, where the company recently achieved its “water positive” milestone ahead of its initial 2027 target. Amazon currently returns 120% of the water consumed across its direct operations—including data centers, fulfillment centers, and corporate offices—back to local communities and ecosystems. With over ₹62 crore committed toward water stewardship projects in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Delhi-NCR, Amazon’s efforts collectively replenish more than 4 billion liters of water annually through watershed restoration, lake rejuvenation, and sustainable irrigation systems.
