April 2026 SUV Sales: Tata Punch Becomes India’s Best-Selling SUV

Date:

Tata Punch Takes the Top Spot in SUV Sales

India’s SUV market witnessed a major reshuffle in April 2026 as the Tata Punch emerged as the highest-selling SUV in the country. The compact SUV recorded sales of 19,107 units, overtaking several established rivals and becoming the second best-selling passenger vehicle overall in India during the month. Industry experts believe the Punch’s affordable pricing, compact dimensions, strong safety reputation, and EV variant popularity have contributed significantly to its rising demand.

The SUV segment continues to dominate the Indian automobile market, with buyers increasingly preferring vehicles that offer higher ground clearance, spacious cabins, and modern features. April 2026 sales figures show that compact and mid-size SUVs are driving market growth across both urban and semi-urban regions.

Maruti Fronx and Tata Nexon Continue Strong Performance

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx maintained its strong momentum by registering sales of 18,829 units. The model has continued to attract younger buyers due to its sporty design and fuel-efficient engine options. Close behind was the Tata Nexon, which posted 18,126 unit sales in April.

The Nexon remains one of Tata Motors’ most successful products, especially because of its strong safety credentials and multiple powertrain options including petrol, diesel, CNG, and EV variants. Meanwhile, the Fronx has emerged as one of Maruti Suzuki’s fastest-growing SUV offerings in the Indian market.

Hyundai Creta Faces Increasing Competition

The Hyundai Creta remained the best-selling SUV in the mid-size category with sales of 15,291 units. However, the vehicle experienced a decline compared to the previous year, indicating rising competition in the segment.

Industry analysts note that newer entrants like the Maruti Suzuki Victoris and refreshed rivals are steadily reducing the Creta’s dominance. Despite the decline, Hyundai continues to enjoy strong brand loyalty and demand for the Creta across India.

Scorpio and Victoris Narrow the Gap

The Mahindra Scorpio recorded impressive sales of 14,719 units, while the newly launched Victoris achieved 13,701 units. These numbers highlight the growing competition in India’s SUV space.

Experts believe Mahindra’s aggressive SUV strategy and Maruti Suzuki’s expansion into premium utility vehicles are reshaping the market. The Victoris, in particular, has quickly become a strong challenger in the mid-size SUV category.

SUVs Continue to Dominate Indian Car Market

SUVs now account for a major share of India’s passenger vehicle sales. Carmakers are focusing heavily on launching feature-rich SUVs equipped with connected technology, panoramic sunroofs, ADAS systems, and hybrid or electric powertrains.

April 2026 sales data also revealed strong performances from models like the Hyundai Venue, Kia Seltos, and Kia Sonet. The Indian auto market is expected to remain highly competitive throughout the year as brands prepare more launches and facelifts in the SUV category.
