Major Shake-Up Ahead of India-Hosted Asian Hockey Champions Trophy
The upcoming Asian Hockey Champions Trophy 2026 has witnessed a major line-up change just weeks before its scheduled start. The Pakistan national hockey team has been excluded from the prestigious six-nation tournament hosted by India. In their place, Bangladesh has been officially drafted into the competition. Scheduled to take place from October 27 to November 5, 2026, the marquee Asian hockey event will be held across two premier venues in Punjab—Jalandhar and Mohali. The tournament features top Asian hockey nations competing for continental glory, but Pakistan’s absence marks a significant political and sporting shift in regional field hockey.
Neutral Venue Demand Rejected by Hockey India and AHF
The exclusion of Pakistan stems from a dispute over match locations. The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) had formally requested the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) to shift their fixtures to a neutral venue, citing safety and political concerns regarding traveling to India. However, Hockey India Secretary General and AHF Vice-President Bhola Nath Singh firmly rejected the proposal, clarifying that no changes would be made to the designated host venues in Punjab. With India refusing to alter tournament logistics and Pakistan unwilling to cross the border, the organizers activated contingency plans, calling up reserve team Bangladesh to ensure the six-team format remained intact.
Bangladesh Steps In Alongside Asia’s Top Hockey Contenders
Bangladesh was originally listed as a reserve nation alongside Oman in case any participating team withdrew. Following Pakistan’s decision not to play in India, Asian Hockey Federation officials confirmed Bangladesh as the official replacement. The updated six-team line-up now comprises host nation India, Japan, China, Malaysia, South Korea, and Bangladesh. Bangladesh’s inclusion gives the nation a valuable platform to test its skills against Asia’s elite hockey powerhouses on one of the biggest stages in regional field hockey.
Jalandhar and Mohali Ready to Host High-Octane Knockout Battles
The Asian Hockey Champions Trophy 2026 will showcase world-class field hockey across Punjab’s historic sporting centers. The league stage matches will take place at the iconic Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar, known for its deep-rooted hockey culture. Following the group battles, the tournament will move to the state-of-the-art Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium in Mohali for the crucial knockout rounds. The semi-finals and final are set for November 4 and November 5 respectively, promising edge-of-the-seat action as India aims to defend home turf against tough Asian competition.
