Chamber of Trade and Industry Demands Ban on Rallies in Commercial Hubs
Ahead of the peak festive shopping period spanning Navratri, Dussehra, and Diwali, the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI), representing nearly 15 lakh traders in the national capital, has formally appealed to the Central government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the Delhi Police Commissioner to impose a strict ban on large political demonstrations and rallies in key commercial and central areas of Delhi. The trade association highlighted that recurring blockades, road diversions, and security barricades during political agitations directly choke retail activities during the most profitable time of the year for local shopkeepers.
CTI leaders emphasized that the crucial period between Navratri and Diwali accounts for a substantial portion of annual sales for traders across key commercial hubs such as Chandni Chowk, Connaught Place, Karol Bagh, Sadar Bazar, Lajpat Nagar, and Sarojini Nagar. Frequent agitations during these high-volume shopping weeks paralyze vehicular movement, trigger intense traffic congestion, and create widespread security anxieties among consumers, severely dampening festive spirit and retail footfalls.
Sharp Decline in Shopper Footfall and Severe Financial Hits
According to operational surveys conducted across key market zones by the CTI, customer footfall and business activity in Delhi’s major shopping destinations recently tumbled by up to 70 percent during days affected by large political demonstrations and police restrictions. Out-of-station shoppers from neighboring NCR regions such as Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad, who traditionally travel to Delhi’s wholesale and retail markets for festive purchasing, avoided entering central commercial corridors due to traffic gridlocks and sudden transit disruptions.
Market associations reported that administrative directives requiring shop closures during high-profile protests have led to catastrophic losses running into thousands of crores of rupees. CTI Chairman Brijesh Goyal noted that forced market shutdowns not only ruin daily sales but also create logjams in supply chains, impacting small vendors, retail staff, transport workers, and seasonal inventory management during a period when businesses heavily depend on steady cash flows.
Traders Declare Markets Will Remain Open and Demand Security
In a firm declaration regarding store operations throughout the ongoing festive season, Delhi’s trade leaders announced that markets will strictly remain open and that shopkeepers will not shut down their businesses for any political agitation or call for strikes. CTI officials, including General Secretary Ramesh Ahuja and Vice-President Rahul Adlakha, stated that the trading community has already suffered substantial economic setbacks and cannot afford further disruptions during their primary earning window.
To ensure uninterrupted commercial operations, the trade body has urged the Delhi Police and local authorities to strengthen security measures, prevent unauthorized blockades around market premises, and establish dedicated protest zones strictly outside the core municipal limits of the city. Traders expressed their complete willingness to cooperate with law enforcement officials to maintain public order, while maintaining that safeguard mechanisms must be put in place immediately so that local commerce can proceed without harassment or security threats.
