Background of the Summons
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a formal summons to Punjab’s Director General of Police, Gaurav Yadav, directing him to appear in Delhi on 25 November. This action follows a serious complaint filed by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), alleging that its workers were being unfairly targeted with multiple FIRs during the ongoing election campaign. According to the party, the police action appeared politically motivated and intended to suppress their electoral activities.
Details of the Complaint
In its complaint, the Shiromani Akali Dal stated that in the Tarn Taran constituency, a series of FIRs were registered against its workers during routine campaign work. One notable case includes FIR No. 0261 dated 15 November 2025, filed under multiple legal sections by Tarn Taran City Police.
The Akali Dal claims these cases were deliberately registered to intimidate party supporters, disrupt campaign operations, and tilt the electoral environment unfairly.
Taking cognizance of the matter, the Election Commission sought detailed reports and subsequently summoned the Punjab DGP to personally review the developments and ensure accountability in the police system.
Political Reactions and Administrative Moves
Senior Akali Dal leader Daljit Singh Cheema welcomed the move by the Election Commission, stating that it reflected the Commission’s seriousness about maintaining fair elections. He highlighted that following the party’s complaint, two DSPs and one SHO were transferred, while an SSP was suspended — steps that reinforced the gravity of the issue.
However, Cheema also expressed concern that despite these administrative actions, the harassment of Akali workers had not fully stopped, and the party expected stronger intervention to ensure a level playing field.
Political observers see the ECI’s summons to a serving state DGP as a rare but impactful step, signaling that the Commission will not tolerate misuse of police machinery or government influence during elections.
What Happens Next
The Punjab DGP is expected to present a detailed account of the FIRs, the actions taken against police officials, and the overall conduct of the force during the election period. The Commission may order further corrective steps if it finds evidence of bias or procedural lapses.
For the Shiromani Akali Dal, this development strengthens its demand for impartiality and fairness in the electoral process. For the state administration, the summons highlights the importance of neutrality and strict compliance with the Election Commission’s guidelines.
