Impersonator Nabbed After Tip-Off in Tarn Taran
In a major operation against impersonation and illegal extortion, the Tarn Taran district police successfully apprehended a young man posing as a Punjab Police Sub-Inspector. The accused was allegedly establishing fake checkpoints in secluded areas across Tarn Taran to extort money from unsuspecting commuters by threatening to frame them in false criminal cases. The arrest was executed following a specific intelligence tip-off received by the police regarding fraudulent activities operating under the guise of official law enforcement.
Modus Operandi: Civilian Clothes to Police Uniform
According to police officials, the accused, identified as Karandeep Singh, a resident of Muradpur in Tarn Taran, operated with a carefully calculated modus operandi to evade suspicion and official detection. Karandeep would routinely leave his residence dressed in ordinary civilian attire. Upon reaching isolated stretches or quiet rural roads, he would change into a complete Punjab Police Sub-Inspector uniform and set up unauthorized police nakas (checkpoints).
Positioning himself in low-traffic, secluded spots minimized the chance of real police patrols encountering him. Dressed in full uniform with an official appearance, Karandeep intercepted commuters and passersby. He would then threaten to register fake criminal cases against them unless they paid immediate monetary bribes or handed over valuables.
Police Recovery and BNS Registration
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Surendra Lamba confirmed the arrest and provided details regarding the operational crackdown. Upon receiving credible information, special police units moved rapidly to track down and detain the suspect. During the apprehension, officers recovered an official Punjab Police uniform, fabricated department badges, and a fake police identification card used by the accused to deceive the public.
Following his arrest, a formal case was registered against Karandeep Singh under multiple relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). SSP Lamba noted that a thorough interrogation is currently underway to ascertain whether Karandeep had accomplices, how long he had been carrying out these fraudulent activities, and how he managed to procure the police uniform and forged identification credentials.
