Central Government Poised to Repatriate Indians Stranded in Gulf Amid Middle East Crisis

Date:

Rising Conflict in the Gulf Region

Amid escalating tensions and armed conflict in the Middle East — particularly between Iran and Israel — airspace disruptions and flight cancellations have left many Indian nationals stranded across the Gulf region. International civil aviation regulators have warned of heightened risks, forcing major airlines to suspend operations over conflict zones, and severely disrupting passenger movement.

In Dubai and other Gulf cities, hundreds of flights have been cancelled, leaving thousands of travelers, including a significant number of Indians, stranded at airports. The volatile security situation has sharply reduced available air connectivity.

Government Response and Preparedness

The Central Government of India, through official statements by Union Minister Prahlad Joshi, has expressed that plans are underway to ensure the safe return of Indian citizens currently stuck in the Gulf. Preparations include coordinating with Indian embassies, leveraging diplomatic channels, and activating repatriation mechanisms once the operational environment allows.

The Ministry of External Affairs is monitoring developments closely and maintaining contact with Indian missions in affected countries to provide real-time support to those in need. Citizens are advised to stay registered with the nearest Indian mission and follow emergency advisories.

Impact on Travel and Regional Mobility

Due to airport closures and aerial restrictions, flight cancellations have soared — reports indicate nearly 900 flights cancelled in some hubs, and rerouting of aircraft to safer corridors. This has not only trapped Indian travelers overseas but also disrupted inbound connections to major Indian airports like Mumbai International Airport.

Airlines such as Air India have already evacuated some of their own crew from the affected zones, while passenger operations remain largely suspended.

What Indian Nationals Should Do

Indian citizens currently in the Gulf or nearby areas are urged to:

  • Stay in contact with the nearest Indian embassy or consulate

  • Register with MEA’s emergency contact portal for updates

  • Follow official travel advisories and security instructions

The government has assured that it will activate evacuation or repatriation missions as soon as safety and logistics allow.
