New Delhi, September 16, 2026: India on Wednesday summoned Pakistan’s Charge d’Affaires in New Delhi and lodged a strong protest over what the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described as the “unacceptable and unprofessional conduct” of Pakistani naval units that led to a collision with an Indian Navy vessel.
The incident took place in international waters and did not result in any major damage, according to the MEA.
India cites 1991 bilateral agreement
According to the MEA, the conduct of the Pakistani naval ship was in direct contravention of Article 10 of the April 1991 Agreement between India and Pakistan on Advance Notice on Military Exercises, Manoeuvres and Troops Movements.
The Indian government conveyed its strong objection to the Pakistani diplomat and asked him to communicate to the relevant authorities in Pakistan the need for military units to exercise due care during operations at sea.
Indian diplomat in Islamabad asked to lodge protest
The MEA said the Charge d’Affaires of India in Islamabad has also been instructed to lodge a similar protest with Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
India has stressed the need for military units from both sides to respect relevant bilateral agreements and exercise caution to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Collision occurred in international waters
The collision involved a Pakistani naval unit and a unit of the Indian Navy in international waters. Officials said there was no major damage as a result of the incident.
The episode has led to a diplomatic exchange between the two countries, with India formally raising the matter through diplomatic channels. Reuters also reported that the Indian foreign ministry described the conduct of the Pakistani naval units as unacceptable and unprofessional.
India calls for adherence to agreements
The MEA said Pakistan’s Charge d’Affaires was advised to convey to the concerned Pakistani authorities that all military units should observe due care and comply with the relevant agreements between the two countries.
The Indian government has also sought to ensure that such incidents do not recur.
The development comes amid continuing sensitivities in India-Pakistan relations, making adherence to established military communication and conduct protocols particularly important.
