India is all set to make its mark in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the launch of its first homegrown AI model. The government has announced that this indigenous AI model will be officially unveiled by February 2026 during the India AI Impact Summit. The model will be trained entirely on Indian datasets and hosted within India, marking a major step toward technological self-reliance.
Objective and Development of the Indigenous AI Model
According to Electronics and IT Secretary S. Krishnan, India’s first fully indigenous AI model will be ready by the end of this year, with an official launch planned for February 2026. This initiative represents a major move toward AI independence, aiming to strengthen India’s position in global AI innovation and research.
38,000 GPUs Deployed for Stronger Computing Infrastructure
Krishnan also revealed that India has significantly expanded its computing infrastructure for AI model development. Initially, the target was 10,000 GPUs, but now the deployment has reached 38,000 GPUs. The government plans to add more GPUs through quarterly open bidding, allowing Indian companies and startups to access high-performance computing resources for AI research and innovation.
India’s Move Toward Indigenous GPU Development
Under the India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, the country is working to develop its own GPUs. The MeitY Secretary emphasized that domestic GPU manufacturing will enhance technological self-reliance and strengthen India’s AI ecosystem in the coming years. This step will ensure that India not only uses AI but also builds the infrastructure required for its long-term sustainability.
Sovereign AI Model Based on Indian Data
MeitY Additional Secretary Abhishek Singh stated that the upcoming Sovereign AI Model will be trained exclusively on Indian datasets and will be hosted within India to maintain data privacy and sovereignty. The government is supporting 12 domestic companies in this mission, and at least two of them are expected to develop foundational AI models by the end of this year.
Government Vision and Future Plans
The government aims to make India’s AI ecosystem globally competitive. With this indigenous AI model, the country will not only enhance technological self-reliance but also provide Indian startups and enterprises access to advanced AI capabilities. The initiative is expected to accelerate innovation, research, and development in India’s rapidly evolving AI landscape.
