Indian PR Industry Unlocks $545 Billion in Economic Impact, Ipsos White Paper Reveals at PRana 2026

Date:

India’s Public Relations (PR) industry has evolved far beyond traditional media outreach and event management into a major strategic catalyst for the nation’s economy. According to a landmark white paper titled “The Economic Impact of Public Relations in India,” produced by research firm Ipsos and released by the Public Relations Consultants Association of India (PRCAI), the sector drives an estimated $545 billion in annual economic value. Unveiled at the PRana 2026 summit in Gurugram, the study reveals that while direct PR agency revenues stand at ₹3,230 crore ($340 million) for FY2026, the strategic impact of PR activities plays a pivotal role in maintaining enterprise valuations, driving corporate revenue, and protecting market capitalisation across major sectors.

Core Economic Levers: Reputation, Revenue, and Crisis Mitigation

The white paper breaks down the total $545 billion economic consequence into three distinct pillars that demonstrate how public relations acts as a tangible financial asset. Reputation management accounts for the largest share at $265 billion. Drawing from investor-relations studies indicating that nearly 28% of investor decisions are driven by corporate reputation, the research calculates PR’s role against India’s $4.5 trillion to $4.75 trillion listed market capitalisation. The second lever, brand awareness and revenue sustainability, contributes an estimated $220 billion by driving consumer trust across nine key commercial sectors, including IT, banking, FMCG, automotive, healthcare, and e-commerce. The third component, crisis management, safeguards approximately $60 billion by helping brands mitigate operational disruptions, product safety issues, governance failures, and cyber incidents.

Sector Risk and the Costs of Corporate Crises

Analyzing over 90 major corporate crises over the past decade, Ipsos highlighted that unmanaged brand backlash or governance failures lead to an average revenue erosion of 0.35% and market capitalisation drop of 1.5%. Of the $60 billion preserved through crisis mitigation, $56 billion is linked directly to preventing market capitalisation losses, while $4 billion relates to direct revenue preservation. Startups, tech unicorns, and e-commerce companies face the highest annual value at risk, standing at $12.8 billion, followed by aviation at $8.9 billion, and healthcare and pharmaceuticals at $7.2 billion.

Industry Insights and Methodological Framework

Leaders at the PRana 2026 summit emphasized that reputation is no longer a soft asset, but hard business currency. The study combined a primary survey of 500 Indian consumers with extensive market data to quantify outcomes rather than outputs. With PR securing an increasing share of total marketing budgets—rising from 12% in FY2025 to 14% in FY2026—corporate boardrooms are increasingly recognizing public relations as a vital discipline for long-term growth, investor trust, and operational resilience.
