Decision Taken by District Bar Association
In a significant development in Jalandhar, the District Bar Association has declared a three-day “No Work Day” from March 16 to March 18 at the local court complex. The decision was taken keeping in view the upcoming elections of the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana, allowing lawyers sufficient time to participate in the democratic process.
The announcement means that advocates will not appear for routine court proceedings during these days, which could temporarily impact legal work and hearings in the district court.
Not a Protest, Says Bar Association
According to Bar Association Secretary Advocate Rohit Gambhir, the decision is not part of any protest or agitation. Instead, the purpose is to encourage lawyers to actively take part in the Bar Council election campaign and ensure a higher voter turnout.
He stated that the Bar Association wants every eligible advocate to get an opportunity to campaign, participate, and vote in the elections, which are considered important for the legal fraternity in the region.
Elections After Several Years
Bar Association President Ram Sharda explained that the elections are being held for a 25-member committee of the Bar Council. Because of the significance of the elections, the association decided to suspend court work for three days so that advocates can focus on the electoral process.
Former President R.K. Bhalla said that these elections are being conducted after nearly seven years, making them particularly important for the legal community.
Lawyers Travelling to Chandigarh
The election process is being held across Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, and several lawyers have already traveled to Chandigarh for election-related activities.
In the Jalandhar district alone, around 3,500 lawyers are registered voters. This time, four candidates are contesting the election, which has increased interest among the members of the Bar.
Key Issues Facing the Bar
The Bar Association has expressed hope that the elected representative from Jalandhar will effectively raise key issues faced by lawyers. Some of the major concerns include:
-
Shortage of courtrooms
-
Parking problems in the court complex
-
Infrastructure challenges for advocates and litigants
The association believes that strong representation in the Bar Council will help address these problems and improve facilities in the court system.
Appeal to Lawyers
The Bar Association has urged all advocates to actively participate in the election process and exercise their voting rights. Leaders of the association believe that maximum participation will strengthen the legal fraternity and ensure better representation at the Bar Council level.
