Over the years, hundreds of impounded two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers have occupied valuable space within police premises, creating severe logistical hurdles, hygiene concerns, and space constraints for daily administrative functioning.
The initiative aims to systematically process vehicles impounded during traffic violation drives, crime investigations, and accident cases. Senior traffic officials emphasized that clearing these vehicles will restore open space in police stations, enhance operational efficiency, and create a cleaner, better-managed environment for both police personnel and visiting citizens.
Legal Notice Issued to Vehicle Owners
To ensure a fair and legal resolution, the Jalandhar Traffic Police department has issued official notices to vehicle owners whose impounded vehicles remain unclaimed in police yards. Vehicle owners are being given a final opportunity to complete necessary documentation, settle pending traffic challans or court proceedings, and claim their property.
Authorities clarified that vehicle owners must present original identification documents, registration certificates (RC), valid insurance, and proof of fine clearance to release their impounded vehicles. Officials stressed that the department is following standard legal protocols to ensure genuine owners receive their property without unnecessary procedural delays.
Auction Process for Unclaimed Property
For vehicles that remain unclaimed despite repeated legal notices, the police department is preparing to initiate public auctions under relevant statutory provisions. A special assessment committee is evaluating the condition and legal status of each vehicle to fix base auction prices. Vehicles involved in finalized court cases or abandoned without valid documentation will be cleared for public bidding.
The funds generated from the public auction will be deposited into the state treasury in accordance with government regulations. Officials noted that this step will not only free up vital public space but also generate revenue while preventing vehicles from rusting into total scrap.
