AI in Cricket: Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association Set to Introduce Artificial Intelligence for Team Selection and Governance

Date:

A Historic Technical Overhaul in Indian Cricket

In a revolutionary move that could change the face of sports governance, the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) has announced the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its administrative and team selection processes. MPCA President Mahanaaryaman Scindia made this landmark announcement during a press conference in Indore right before the finale of the Madhya Pradesh League (MPL) 2026. This pioneering step makes the MPCA the first cricket body in the world to implement AI on such a large scale for cricket administration and talent identification, creating a digitized operating system across state, divisional, and district levels.

Eradicating Bias and Increasing Selection Accountability

The most talked-about aspect of this digital transformation is the application of AI in player selection. Historically, regional and state team selections have faced criticism regarding subjective bias or favoritism. The newly introduced AI-powered system aims to entirely eliminate human bias by evaluating objective statistical metrics. The software will process comprehensive data sets including total runs scored, wickets taken, strike rates, economy rates, and specific situational performance metrics to recommend the most deserving players.

While the ultimate decision-making power remains with the physical human selection committee, the AI system will instill a strict layer of accountability. If selectors choose a player or drop an athlete outside of the AI’s data-backed recommendations, they will be legally and administratively required to register detailed written explanations for their decisions. This ensures every selection query remains transparent and completely open to institutional audits.

Comprehensive Digital Governance and Financial Transparency

The smart platform is developed in a specialized six-month partnership with an emerging artificial intelligence startup named ‘Emergent’, led by CEO Mukund Jha. The collaborative goal is to digitize the entire structural blueprint of sports administration. Beyond team selection, the AI platform will oversee complex financial architectures. This includes automated document verification for local players, tracking multi-tiered expenditures, monitoring district associations, and managing the approval and direct distribution of financial grants to divisional and grassroots cricket units. Players, coaches, and administrators will have unique digital accounts to upload achievements and process administrative needs, establishing an integrated digital enterprise resource planning (ERP) framework.

Testing and Rollout Timelines Across Madhya Pradesh

The innovative AI software underwent rigorous field-testing during the recent 2026 season of the Madhya Pradesh T20 League (MPL), where it successfully processed match analytics, handled automated operational data, and boosted fan engagement metrics. Following this success, the MPCA plans to officially deploy the comprehensive AI module across all of its 53 district and divisional wings. The full state-wide system deployment is scheduled to be active before the official commencement of the upcoming Indian domestic cricket season in September 2026, marking a monumental shift toward tech-driven sports development.
