A devastating structural collapse triggered by relentless monsoon rains has claimed the lives of at least 11 family members, including women and children, in the northwestern region of Pakistan. The tragic incident occurred late Monday night in the Malagin village, located on the outskirts of the Lachi area in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Kohat district. Emergency rescue services rushed to the scene but faced severe challenges due to the damaged local infrastructure and continuous downpour.
The victims, predominantly women and children, were attending a closely-knit family gathering when the roof of the mud-brick residential structure suddenly caved in. The collapse completely trapped 23 individuals under a heavy mound of mud and concrete debris, turning an evening of family togetherness into an absolute disaster.
Rapid Emergency Operations Pull Victims from Mud Debris
Following the sudden collapse, emergency teams from Rescue 1122 in Kohat and the neighboring Karak district immediately mobilized to initiate a complex search-and-rescue operation. Rescue workers, assisted by local residents, worked tirelessly through the night under difficult weather conditions to clear the heavy mud and rubble with specialized equipment and manual tools.
Officials confirmed that they successfully extracted all 23 trapped individuals from the debris. However, 11 victims succumbed to their injuries or suffocation before they could be fully rescued or during transit to the nearest medical facilities. The deceased included six women and three children. The remaining 12 injured individuals were transported to a nearby district hospital, where medical staff confirmed that several victims remain in critical condition, meaning the death toll could unfortunately rise.
Monsoon Fury Ravages Infrastructure in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
The deadly incident comes as torrential monsoon rains continue to lash multiple parts of northwestern Pakistan. The wet season, while crucial for agriculture, regularly brings structural hazards to rural and low-income communities. Mud-brick structures, which are common in rural settlements across the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, are highly vulnerable to prolonged dampness, absorption of heavy rainwater, and subsequent structural failures.
In light of the ongoing heavy rainfall, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued urgent safety advisories for residents living in dilapidated or mud-built houses. Authorities have also warned of impending flash floods and increased water discharge from regional dams over the next 48 hours as water inflows continue to rise rapidly.
