Punjab Police to Use AI to Track Gangsters in Major Tech Push

Date:

AI Partnership Between Punjab Police and IIT Ropar

Punjab Police has taken a major technological leap by partnering with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar to deploy advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools aimed at tackling organised crime. The initiative, backed by the Bhagwant Mann-led government, is designed to strengthen law enforcement capabilities and dismantle gangster networks operating both within India and abroad.

This collaboration is expected to significantly boost ongoing anti-crime campaigns such as ‘Gangstran Te Vaar’ and ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’, enabling police forces to act with greater precision and intelligence.

Unified Criminal Database to Revolutionize Investigations

A key feature of the project is the creation of a unified and comprehensive criminal database. Currently, police records are scattered across handwritten documents, scanned files, and legacy systems.

The new AI-powered system will digitize and integrate this fragmented data into a structured format. This will allow instant access to detailed criminal profiles, drastically reducing investigation time and improving coordination between departments.

By converting unstructured records into actionable intelligence, the system aims to ensure that no crucial information is lost or overlooked.

Real-Time Tracking and Predictive Policing

The AI tools being developed by IIT Ropar will include advanced analytics, voice recognition, and dashboard-based monitoring systems. These technologies will enable real-time tracking of suspects and criminal activities.

More importantly, predictive models will help police anticipate crime patterns, identify emerging threats, and take preventive action before incidents occur. This marks a shift from reactive policing to proactive, intelligence-driven law enforcement.

Officials believe this will help authorities stay one step ahead of criminals, especially those operating from overseas who recruit local youth for illegal activities.

Strengthening Public Safety Through Technology

The initiative will be coordinated through a dedicated Data Intelligence and Technical Support Unit based in Mohali. This unit will ensure seamless collaboration between technical experts and law enforcement agencies.

With improved crime detection, faster response times, and enhanced monitoring of criminal networks, the project is expected to significantly strengthen public safety across Punjab.

By leveraging AI and machine learning, Punjab Police aims to build a future-ready policing system capable of tackling modern, tech-enabled crime.
