Legal Escalation to the Court of Arbitration for Sport
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has decided to initiate formal legal proceedings by approaching the Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). This decisive action follows a major controversy surrounding a faulty distance measurement during the women’s long jump event at the Asian Games 2026. The federation claims that a human measurement error by field officials robbed Indian athlete Shaili Singh of a deserved medal, potentially costing her the gold. Refusing to let the injustice pass without a challenge, Indian sports administrators are pushing for formal intervention at the highest global sports court.
Controversial Long Jump Measurement and Final Standings
The disputed final round saw Shaili Singh finish fourth with an officially recorded best mark of 6.42 metres. The gold medal was claimed by China’s Huang Yingying with a final attempt of 6.55 metres, while fellow Indian long jumper Ancy Sojan clinched the silver medal with a leap of 6.53 metres. However, serious doubts were cast over Shaili’s fourth attempt, which officials marked at 6.41 metres. The Indian delegation contends that this specific attempt crossed beyond the gold-winning mark, but improper measurement procedures drastically shortened her recorded distance.
Anju Bobby George Alleges Violation of Officiating Protocols
Legendary Indian athlete and AFI Senior Vice-President Anju Bobby George, who serves as Shaili Singh’s mentor, highlighted blatant officiating violations at the landing pit. According to her statement, the official stationed closest to the landing pit initially identified the correct mark left by Shaili’s leg. However, another official positioned further back pointed to a significantly shorter mark. Officials then proceeded to measure from the second mark, ignoring standard protocols that dictate distance must be measured from the mark noted by the official closest to the landing spot.
Protests Rejected and Missing Video Angles
Following the discrepancy, the Indian coaching staff and athlete lodged an immediate official protest on the field. The appeal process quickly grew frustrating when officials presented only a front-view camera angle that made it impossible to verify the exact landing point. Demands by the Indian camp for side-view footage were met with assertions that such video angles were unavailable. Although a subsequent appeal to the jury was summarily dismissed, the AFI remains firm in its stance that Shaili suffered an immense injustice and is determined to seek restitution through CAS.
