Thai Cargo Ship En Route to Gujarat’s Kandla Port Attacked in Strait of Hormuz

Date:

Attack on Cargo Ship in Strategic Waterway

A Thai-flagged cargo vessel heading toward India came under attack while passing through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, raising fresh concerns about maritime safety in the region. The vessel, identified as Mayuree Naree, was reportedly struck by unknown projectiles during its transit through the narrow shipping corridor linking the Persian Gulf with the Arabian Sea.

The incident occurred as the ship was sailing toward Kandla Port in Gujarat after departing from Khalifa Port in the United Arab Emirates. Following the impact, a fire broke out onboard, with black smoke seen rising from the vessel. The attack highlights the growing risks for commercial shipping routes amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Crew Forced to Evacuate After Explosion

According to reports, the explosion caused significant damage to the ship, particularly in the engine compartment. The blast triggered a fire onboard, forcing crew members to abandon the vessel using emergency lifeboats.

Out of the 23 crew members onboard, 20 sailors were successfully rescued by the Omani navy after they evacuated the burning vessel. However, three crew members who were reportedly in the engine room at the time of the explosion remain missing, and rescue operations were launched to locate them.

Authorities confirmed that the rescued sailors were taken to the Omani port city of Khasab for medical checks and safety assessment.

Rising Security Concerns in the Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, with a significant share of global oil and trade shipments passing through the narrow waterway every day. Any disruption in this region can have immediate consequences for global energy markets and international trade.

In recent weeks, tensions in the Middle East have escalated sharply, with several incidents involving attacks on commercial vessels. Security agencies have warned shipping companies to exercise caution while navigating the region.

Maritime monitoring agencies say the attack on the Thai cargo vessel is part of a series of recent incidents targeting merchant ships traveling through the Gulf. Such attacks increase risks for cargo shipments bound for countries like India, which rely heavily on maritime trade routes passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

Impact on Global Shipping and Trade

The attack has once again raised concerns about the safety of international shipping lanes. Shipping companies and maritime insurers are closely monitoring developments in the region as tensions continue to rise.

Experts say any prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could lead to increased shipping costs, higher insurance premiums, and delays in cargo deliveries across Asia and the Middle East.

For India, ports such as Kandla handle a large volume of imports and exports, making the safety of shipping routes in the Persian Gulf region critically important.

Authorities and maritime agencies are continuing to investigate the incident, while rescue teams remain engaged in search operations for the missing crew members.
