Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Announces ₹30 Lakh Cash Reward for Weightlifter Raja Muthupandi After Commonwealth Games Silver Victory

Date:

A Historic Sporting Milestone in Glasgow

In a proud moment for Indian sports, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has announced a cash reward of ₹30 lakh for weightlifter Raja Muthupandi following his sensational silver medal win at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships held in Glasgow, Scotland. Competing in the men’s 65kg category, Muthupandi put on an extraordinary display of strength, resilience, and tactical composure on the international stage to clinch second place for India.

The prestigious tournament featured nearly 3,000 elite athletes representing 74 countries. Amid intense global competition, Muthupandi’s stand-out performance highlighted India’s growing dominance in weightlifting, earning widespread applause from sports enthusiasts, government officials, and citizens across the nation.

Grit and Determination: Muthupandi’s Thrilling Comeback

Hailing from the Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu, Raja Muthupandi’s journey to the podium in Glasgow was a testament to his determination under pressure. The competition began with an initial setback during the snatch segment when Muthupandi failed his opening lift at 126kg. Undeterred, he regrouped quickly, displaying remarkable focus to successfully clear 126kg on his second attempt. Although his third attempt at 129kg fell short, his 126kg score kept him squarely in contention for a medal.

Muthupandi demonstrated similar grit in the clean and jerk segment. After a missed first attempt at 158kg, he raised the bar and successfully lifted 160kg on his second try. This brought his combined total to a stellar 286kg, securing the silver medal in the 65kg division and cementing his reputation as one of India’s top weightlifting talents.

Chief Minister Vijay Honors Tamil Nadu’s Sporting Hero

Recognizing the magnitude of this international achievement, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay personally commended Muthupandi’s perseverance and dedication. Announcing the ₹30 lakh financial reward, CM Vijay emphasized that the state government is deeply committed to supporting top-tier talent and ensuring that world-class athletes receive the recognition they deserve.

In an official public message, Chief Minister Vijay stated: “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Raja Muthupandi for winning the silver medal in the men’s 65kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Championships in Glasgow. His success is a matter of immense pride for Tamil Nadu. May this achievement inspire our youth, and I wish him many more victories that will bring honour to both Tamil Nadu and the nation.”

Fostering a Vibrant Sports Culture Across Tamil Nadu

The ₹30 lakh cash incentive is part of Tamil Nadu’s ongoing initiative to elevate sports infrastructure, provide high-performance training grants, and reward athletes who bring laurels to the state and country. Government officials emphasized that recognizing athletes like Muthupandi creates a cascading positive effect on the state’s youth, encouraging sports participation at the grassroots level.
