Family Appeals to the Assam Governor for Justice
The grieving family of late singer Zubeen Garg has taken a major step in their pursuit of justice by meeting Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Lok Bhavan. Led by the singer’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, and sister, Palme Borthakur, along with prominent figures from the Assamese film industry, the family submitted a detailed memorandum. Their primary appeal to the Governor is to ensure effective prosecution, strongly oppose bail applications filed by the accused, and expedite the judicial trial in this high-profile case.
Background and Mysterious Circumstances of Death
The celebrated singer and artist tragically passed away under mysterious circumstances on September 19, 2025, while swimming in the sea in Singapore. He had travelled to the Southeast Asian nation to attend the fourth edition of the North East India Festival (NEIF). Although a separate investigation by Singapore authorities and a Coroner’s Court ruled out foul play and concluded it was a drowning incident due to severe intoxication, the state of Assam launched an independent criminal probe following widespread public outcry and dozens of FIRs.
Concerns Over Bail and Legal Challenges
The family’s recent intervention was largely prompted by the Gauhati High Court granting bail to two of the accused individuals, which triggered deep apprehension and anguish. The memorandum explicitly urges the state government to challenge these bail orders before a higher judicial forum, such as the Supreme Court, without avoidable delay. Furthermore, the family called for a unified prosecution coordination mechanism under the Assam Advocate General to monitor fast-track court proceedings and ensure robust presentation of forensic and digital evidence.
Allegations of Financial Irregularities and Next Steps
Beyond the criminal charges related to negligence and culpable homicide, the family’s memorandum also flagged serious allegations of financial irregularities and suspected criminal activities involving certain accused persons. These include the alleged recovery of official government department seals, multiple PAN cards, and the suspected misappropriation of Garg’s earnings. The family has requested a thorough investigation into these monetary fraud angles, reiterating that their unified quest for truth transcends political differences and remains focused strictly on upholding the rule of law.
