Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Khaleda Zia, has passed away at the age of 80 on Tuesday, December 30, 2025. The news was followed by an emotional tribute from her son, Tarique Rahman, who shared a message on X (formerly Twitter) reflecting on her life and contributions.
A Son’s Tribute and Legacy
In his post, Tarique Rahman announced, “My mother, BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, has responded to the call of Almighty Allah and left us today. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.” He highlighted that his mother was more than a political figure; she was recognized as the mother of democracy and of Bangladesh itself. Throughout her life, she was dedicated to strengthening the nation’s democratic framework, consistently opposing authoritarianism and suppression.
Enduring Spirit Amidst Adversity
Rahman also described Khaleda Zia as a deeply affectionate, gentle, and courageous mother who consistently supported her family through challenging periods. Her maternal care and compassion remained constant despite her political struggles. She faced numerous challenges, including repeated arrests, being denied medical care, and continuous political persecution. Despite these adversities, her resolve remained strong, characterized by a calm yet unwavering and powerful demeanor. Having lost her husband and children in service to the country, the people of Bangladesh became her extended family, and national service became her life’s purpose and direction. Her legacy of patriotism, sacrifice, and dedication to democracy is expected to continue inspiring future generations, marking her contributions as an indelible part of Bangladesh’s democratic narrative. Her passing is viewed as the conclusion of a significant era in Bangladeshi political history.
On behalf of the family, Tarique Rahman expressed profound gratitude for the love, respect, and condolences received from across the country and globally during this time.
