India’s Passport Rises in Global Travel Ranking
In the latest Henley Passport Index 2026, India’s passport has made a significant leap in global ranking, climbing from 85th in 2025 to 75th in 2026, marking a 10-place jump year-on-year. This improvement reflects stronger global mobility and better travel access for Indian citizens, showcasing growing diplomatic ties and ease of international movement.
What the New Ranking Means
The Henley Passport Index, published annually by Henley & Partners, ranks all global passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa (including visa-free, visa-on-arrival, and electronic travel authorisation entries). A higher ranking indicates greater travel freedom and convenience for passport holders.
For 2026, India’s passport now ranks 75th globally. This is a marked improvement from last year’s 85th rank and signals a recovery in travel access following fluctuating positions over recent years.
Visa-Free & Visa-On-Arrival Countries
Indian passport holders now enjoy visa-free, visa-on-arrival, or ETA access to 56 destinations worldwide. This includes many nations across Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific, offering longer-term benefits for tourism, business, and cultural exchange.
Despite this gain, the total number of visa-free destinations for Indians has slightly changed compared to previous years as some destinations modify their entry policies.
Comparison with Global Leaders
While India’s ranking has improved, several countries still enjoy far greater travel freedom. Singapore tops the ranking with access to 192 destinations without prior visa, followed by Japan, South Korea, and top European nations with extensive travel access.
Why It Matters
Passport strength is a widely followed indicator of global mobility and diplomatic relations. India’s improved ranking shows expanding global connectivity for its citizens, making international travel easier without the complexity of advance visa procedures.
