Changing Weather Conditions in Punjab
Weather conditions in Punjab have changed significantly as clouds covered many areas and light drizzle was reported in several districts. Since late night, strong winds have also been blowing across parts of the state, signaling a shift in weather patterns. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert warning residents about possible rain, thunderstorms, and hailstorms in several districts.
According to the forecast, the sudden change in weather is linked to a western disturbance affecting northern India. Such disturbances often bring rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds to the region during the pre-summer season.
Orange Alert Issued for Several Districts
The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for parts of Punjab, warning that rainfall along with hailstorms may occur in about nine districts of the state. The alert suggests that weather activity could intensify throughout the day.
Under the orange alert, authorities advise residents to remain cautious as strong winds and thunderstorms may affect normal life. Power disruptions, falling tree branches, and reduced visibility are possible during intense weather conditions.
Possibility of Hailstorm and Strong Winds
Weather experts have also warned that hailstorms may occur in some districts, especially during thunderstorm activity. Strong winds are expected to accompany rain, which could temporarily lower temperatures across the state.
The IMD forecast indicates that thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 30–50 km/h may affect Punjab and nearby regions during this weather system.
Hailstorms are particularly concerning for farmers, as crops such as wheat are nearing harvest season in many parts of Punjab.
Impact on Farmers and Crops
The sudden weather change has raised concerns among farmers. At this time of year, wheat crops in many areas are close to harvesting stage. Rain and hailstorms can flatten standing crops or damage grain quality.
Agricultural experts have advised farmers to remain alert and take precautionary measures where possible. Protecting harvested crops and monitoring fields during storms may help reduce potential losses.
Temperature Likely to Drop
Meteorologists say that rainfall and cloudy conditions may lead to a slight drop in daytime temperatures across Punjab. After the passage of the weather system, temperatures may stabilize again.
Such weather fluctuations are common in northern India during March due to western disturbances moving across the Himalayan region.
Advisory for Residents
Authorities have urged residents to stay cautious during storms. People are advised to avoid standing under trees, secure loose objects outdoors, and follow local weather updates.
Travelers should also remain alert as heavy rain or storms could temporarily affect road visibility and traffic conditions.
