Delhi-NCR Gets Relief From Heatwave As IMD Predicts Rain And Thunderstorms

Date:

Heatwave Conditions Begin To Ease Across North India

After days of extreme heatwave conditions across North India, residents of Delhi-NCR finally received some relief as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds in the region. Temperatures that had crossed dangerous levels in several states are expected to drop significantly over the next few days.

According to the IMD, Delhi may witness light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50-60 kmph. Weather experts believe that western disturbances and moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal are responsible for the sudden change in weather conditions.

Delhi Temperature Likely To Fall Sharply

The maximum temperature in Delhi was expected to remain around 43 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, while the minimum hovered near 29 degrees Celsius. However, a major weather shift is expected from May 29 onward, bringing temperatures down to nearly 36 degrees Celsius.

The IMD also warned about lightning, squalls, and thunderstorms in various parts of Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad. Similar weather conditions are expected to continue till May 31, providing much-needed relief from the intense summer heat.

Rajasthan And Uttar Pradesh Continue To Suffer

While Delhi is expected to cool down, many parts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh continued to reel under severe heatwave conditions. Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan recorded a scorching 48.2 degrees Celsius, making it one of the hottest places in the country.

Cities such as Pilani, Bikaner, Churu, Jaisalmer, and Phalodi also reported temperatures above 46 degrees Celsius. In Uttar Pradesh, Banda recorded 47.8 degrees Celsius, while Prayagraj, Jhansi, and Kanpur witnessed temperatures crossing 45 degrees Celsius.

The IMD has advised people to avoid direct sunlight during afternoon hours and stay hydrated to prevent heatstroke and dehydration.

PM Narendra Modi Urges Citizens To Stay Safe

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also appealed to citizens to take precautions amid the extreme weather conditions. In a social media message, he urged people to remain hydrated, carry water while travelling, and help others suffering due to the heat.

The government and disaster management authorities are closely monitoring the changing weather conditions across North India.

Southwest Monsoon Advances Further

The IMD also announced that the southwest monsoon has advanced into additional parts of the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep region, and Bay of Bengal. Although the monsoon missed its expected arrival date in Kerala by a few days, meteorologists said conditions remain favourable for further progress in the coming days.

India receives over 70 percent of its annual rainfall during the monsoon season, making it critical for agriculture, drinking water supply, and power generation.
