Government Names New Chief of Army Staff

The Government of India has appointed Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth as the next Chief of the Army Staff (COAS). He will assume office on June 30, succeeding General Upendra Dwivedi, who is scheduled to retire on the same day. The appointment marks an important transition in the leadership of the Indian Army and comes at a time when the force is focusing on modernization, technology integration, and operational readiness.

Distinguished Military Career Spanning Nearly Four Decades

Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth is a highly decorated officer with nearly four decades of service in the Indian Army. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA), he was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986. Over the years, he has held several key operational, command, and staff appointments across diverse military environments.

His career reflects extensive experience in leadership, strategic planning, and operational management. He has commanded an Armoured Regiment, an Armoured Brigade, and a Counter-Insurgency Force in Jammu and Kashmir, demonstrating his capability in both conventional and unconventional military operations.

Experience Across Strategic Commands

Throughout his career, Lt Gen Seth has led several important formations of the Indian Army. As a Lieutenant General, he commanded the prestigious Sudarshan Chakra Corps and later served as General Officer Commanding (GOC) Delhi Area. He also headed both the South Western Command and the Southern Command, two of the Army’s most significant operational formations.

Before being selected as the next Army Chief, he took over as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff in April 2026. His tenure in senior leadership roles has provided him with valuable experience in military strategy, force preparedness, and modernization initiatives.

Focus on Modernization and Technology

Lt Gen Seth has consistently emphasized the importance of emerging technologies in shaping the future of warfare. During recent public engagements, he highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence, robotics, cyber capabilities, and data-driven military operations. He has advocated for strengthening indigenous defence capabilities and enhancing technological self-reliance within the armed forces.

His leadership is expected to support the Indian Army’s ongoing transformation efforts aimed at creating a future-ready force capable of meeting evolving security challenges.

Leadership During Critical Periods

The senior officer has been associated with several significant military responsibilities during his career. His leadership roles across various commands have provided him with firsthand experience in border management, operational planning, counter-insurgency operations, and strategic force deployment.

Defence experts believe his broad exposure to different operational theatres and command environments makes him well-equipped to lead the Indian Army during a period of rapid technological and geopolitical change.

Looking Ahead

As Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth prepares to assume the role of Chief of Army Staff, expectations remain high regarding continued modernization, enhanced operational preparedness, and greater integration of advanced technologies into military operations. His appointment reflects the government’s confidence in his leadership abilities and extensive military experience.

With a distinguished service record and a strong focus on transformation, Lt Gen Seth is set to lead the Indian Army into its next phase of development and strategic readiness.
