Portugal Star Faces Messi Chants Following Frustrating World Cup Opener

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo showed remarkable composure after being targeted with “Messi, Messi” chants from DR Congo supporters following Portugal’s disappointing 1-1 draw in their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 Group K match.

The incident occurred moments after the final whistle in Houston, where Portugal failed to secure all three points despite taking an early lead. A viral video circulating on social media captured Ronaldo walking toward the tunnel while sections of the crowd repeatedly chanted the name of his long-time rival, Lionel Messi.

Rather than reacting angrily or engaging with the crowd, Ronaldo calmly applauded the fans before continuing his walk off the pitch. The gesture quickly gained attention online, with many praising the Portuguese star for handling the situation with dignity.

Ronaldo Chooses Respect Over Controversy

The chants appeared to be an attempt by DR Congo supporters to provoke the 41-year-old football icon after a frustrating evening. However, Ronaldo avoided any confrontation and acknowledged the atmosphere with a simple round of applause.

Football fans on social media widely applauded his response, describing it as a classy reaction to a potentially hostile situation. The moment also reignited discussions around the historic rivalry between Ronaldo and Messi, two players who have dominated world football for nearly two decades.

Portugal Left Frustrated by DR Congo

Portugal started the match brightly and opened the scoring in the sixth minute through João Neves, who converted a cross from Pedro Neto. Despite enjoying the majority of possession, Portugal struggled to create meaningful chances afterward.

DR Congo responded just before halftime when Yoane Wissa scored the nation’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal, helping the African side earn a historic 1-1 draw. The result also delivered DR Congo’s first World Cup point since returning to the tournament after a 52-year absence.

Ronaldo Endures Difficult Night

Ronaldo, making history with his sixth FIFA World Cup appearance, found it difficult to influence the match. The veteran striker was closely marked throughout the contest and missed a couple of opportunities in the second half as Portugal searched for a winning goal.

The draw was a disappointing start for a Portuguese side considered among the favorites to progress from Group K. Manager Roberto Martinez admitted that his team lacked urgency after taking the early lead and failed to maintain attacking pressure.

Viral Moment Dominates Social Media

Although the result itself was a major talking point, much of the online discussion focused on Ronaldo’s reaction to the chants. Videos of the incident quickly spread across social platforms, with fans debating the continued Ronaldo-Messi rivalry.

Many observers praised Ronaldo’s calm demeanor, noting that his applause effectively defused the situation and demonstrated sportsmanship despite the disappointment of the result.
