A Lukewarm Start for YRF’s First Female-Led Spy Film
The highly anticipated action thriller Alpha, starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari Wagh, officially hit theatres today, July 3, 2026. As the first female-led standalone installment in the massive Yash Raj Films (YRF) Spy Universe, expectations were sky-high. However, morning and afternoon shows across major urban centers reported a surprisingly sluggish start. Despite the high-octane branding and a massive budget estimated at around Rs 100 crore, initial footfalls remained extremely low, with multiple cinema halls across the country showing empty seats and single-digit occupancies.
Disappointing Advance Bookings and Empty Theatres
Trade analysts noted that the momentum for Alpha was weak leading right up to its release date. According to early tracking data from Sacnilk, the film accumulated approximately Rs 1.52 crore to Rs 3.06 crore in total pre-sales, selling close to 90,000 tickets nationwide. While national multiplex chains like PVR, INOX, and Cinepolis drove the bulk of these sales, the overall opening day occupancy hovered around a modest 6% to 9% during the early shows.
Social media platforms were quickly flooded with pictures and videos of empty premium auditoriums, triggering intense discussions among trade enthusiasts. Many point out that the film struggled to create the explosive pre-release buzz usually associated with male superstar-led YRF blockbusters like Pathaan or War. Instead, Alpha is drawing comparisons to Alia Bhatt’s previous action venture Jigra, which also faced a tough uphill battle at the ticket windows.
Divisive Fan Reactions and Corporate Booking Debates
As the first day progressed, fan reactions emerged as a mixed bag. Action movie lovers praised the high-production values, the intense stunt sequences performed by Alia and Sharvari, and a heavily discussed special appearance by Hrithik Roshan as Kabir. Conversely, critical viewers criticized the predictable plot and an outdated marketing strategy. The production house chose not to release any promotional songs before the theatrical release, claiming they held key plot spoilers—a move that audiences feel severely hampered the film’s musical ground support and generic public excitement.
Meanwhile, a massive debate has erupted online regarding the legitimacy of ticket sales. Several cinema-goers noticed a sharp contrast between online ticketing apps—which showed high demand or nearly sold-out shows—and the actual ground reality of half-empty theatres. This discrepancy has led to widespread speculation on platforms like Reddit, where users are accusing the makers of relying heavily on corporate bookings and tactical blockings to artificially inflate the opening day numbers.
Can Word of Mouth Save the Film?
Despite the rocky start, trade experts believe it is too early to write off Alpha. Maharashtra and the Delhi-NCR regions have emerged as the strongest territories, contributing the highest shares to the opening day numbers. Since the action entertainer enjoys a relatively solo release window with no major Bollywood competition, its ultimate fate now hinges completely on evening show turnarounds and public word of mouth over the weekend. Trade projections estimate Day 1 collections to land anywhere between Rs 5 crore and Rs 8 crore net in India. Whether the film can pick up momentum or will face a steep downward trend remains to be seen.
