BMW X1 LWB Petrol Review: The Value-Packed Luxury Choice for Chauffeur-Driven Buyers

Date:

BMW has expanded its popular luxury entry-segment lineup by launching the petrol version of the X1 Long Wheelbase (LWB). Following the massive success and acclaim of the electric iX1 LWB, bringing a long wheelbase option to the standard petrol derivative was a logical move for the Indian market. Indian luxury car buyers heavily prioritize rear-seat legroom, overall cabin space, and overall comfort—especially those who prefer being driven around by a chauffeur. The petrol X1 LWB addresses these needs while keeping the proportion and exterior proportions balanced without looking awkwardly stretched.

Premium Interior Features and Cabin Layout

Step inside the cabin, and the overall design language closely mirrors its electric sibling. A large curved touchscreen dominates the dashboard alongside a floating center console. In line with modern BMW interior layouts, physical buttons are kept to a minimum, shifting most function controls directly onto the digital display. While the lower dashboard panels omit the ultra-soft-touch materials seen on higher-tier BMW models, the overall material selection, contrast trim, and structural refinement ensure it retains a strong luxury atmosphere.

Enhanced Rear-Seat Comfort and Space

The primary highlight of the X1 LWB is undoubtedly its extended rear cabin. Thanks to a 108mm stretch in the wheelbase, legroom has increased dramatically compared to the previous standard model. Headroom remains ample, and the vast panoramic glass roof allows natural light to flood the interior, elevating the feeling of spaciousness. Furthermore, BMW has upgraded the rear seat cushioning to a softer density to improve passenger support over long journeys. The expansive windows make the cabin feel airy, though manual or powered rear sunblinds remain a noticeable omission.

Engine Performance and Driving Dynamics

Powering the X1 LWB petrol is an E25-compliant 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission. Generating 156 bhp and 230 Nm of torque, the engine focuses on quiet refinement and linear acceleration rather than raw track performance. Acceleration is adequate for city driving and steady highway cruising. While it lacks the sharp punch typical of performance-oriented BMW models, its smooth setup is tailored specifically for relaxed, effortless commuting.

Ride Quality, Noise Insulation, and Fuel Efficiency

Ride comfort is where the X1 LWB truly excels. BMW has tuned the suspension to absorb potholes and road unevenness gracefully, providing a compliant and supple ride tailored for rear-seat passengers. Excellent Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) levels keep engine hum and exterior road rumble minimal. Fuel efficiency averages around 10 to 12 km/l in mixed urban conditions, with better figures achievable during prolonged highway trips.

Final Verdict: Is It Worth Buying?

The BMW X1 LWB Petrol stands out as a significantly improved luxury vehicle compared to the previous standard version. By prioritizing rear-seat comfort, plush ride quality, and refined cabin noise levels over high-performance output, BMW has crafted an ideal option for first-time luxury car buyers who plan to be chauffeur-driven.
