Altercation at Community Feast Leads to Police Detention
A 28-year-old man, identified as Rajesh, died after his health deteriorated while held in police custody in Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun district. The incident stems from a violent clash between two rival groups during a community feast organized at Atsena village. Following the fight, officers from the Dataganj police station stepped in to restore order and brought several individuals in for questioning.
According to senior police officials, members of one group sustained notable injuries during the scuffle and were immediately sent to a medical facility for treatment. Meanwhile, police booked Rajesh under preventive measures for breach of peace and detained him at the Dataganj police station for further investigation and legal proceedings.
Sudden Deterioration and Emergency Medical Care
While in custody at the Dataganj police station, Rajesh experienced a sudden medical crisis. Senior Superintendent of Police Ankita Sharma stated that at around 4:00 PM, Rajesh used the police station toilet and collapsed shortly after returning to the main holding room. Duty personnel noticed his collapse and rushed to assist him.
The police immediately transported Rajesh to the nearby Dataganj Community Health Centre (CHC). Dr. Ritesh Bhasin, a medical officer at the CHC, reported that Rajesh arrived with severe breathing difficulties and was in critical condition. Due to his rapidly worsening state, doctors referred him to the Badaun District Hospital for specialized emergency treatment, where he succumbed later in the evening.
Family Alleges Mismanagement While Police Cite Post-Mortem Findings
The family of the deceased has raised serious allegations against the police administration. Relatives claimed that Rajesh died while inside the police station itself and alleged that authorities failed to provide timely or accurate information to medical staff. Furthermore, the family expressed outrage over not being informed promptly or allowed to accompany Rajesh to the hospital during his medical emergency.
Refuting these allegations, Senior Superintendent of Police Ankita Sharma clarified that CCTV footage captured the entire sequence of events. The video shows Rajesh lying down, sitting up, walking to the restroom, and collapsing upon return before officers rushed to help him. Police officials stated that a panel of doctors conducted a formal post-mortem examination, concluding that cardiac arrest was the official cause of death. Medical reports confirmed that there were no visible injury marks or signs of physical assault on his body, and authorities have promised an impartial inquiry by a competent officer.
