MG Hector Tomahawk vs Toyota Innova Hycross vs Mahindra XEV 9s: A Comprehensive Comparison

Date:

The Indian automotive landscape is undergoing a massive shift with the arrival of advanced hybrid and fully electric SUVs. MG Motor has entered this competitive space by targeting two distinct buyer segments at once with the new MG Hector Tomahawk. Offered in both Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) and battery electric vehicle (EV) configurations, the SUV goes head-to-head with established market heavyweights. The Hector Tomahawk PHEV directly challenges the popular Toyota Innova Hycross strong hybrid, while the Hector Tomahawk EV takes on the feature-packed Mahindra XEV 9s electric SUV.

Hybrid Showdown: MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV vs Toyota Innova Hycross

The hybrid battle highlights two very different engineering philosophies designed to deliver efficiency and daily usability. The MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV utilizes an advanced plug-in hybrid setup combining a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with a sizable 20.5 kWh battery pack. This combination generates a robust system output of 198 bhp. Thanks to its plug-in capability and large battery capacity, the Tomahawk PHEV achieves an impressive claimed fuel efficiency of 40 kmpl, along with a total driving range of 1,100 km on a full tank.

On the other hand, the Toyota Innova Hycross hybrid features a self-charging strong hybrid system powered by a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with a smaller 1.6 kWh battery pack. Producing 184 bhp, the Innova Hycross delivers a tested fuel economy of 22.16 kmpl. While the Hycross relies purely on regenerative braking and engine power to charge its small battery, the Tomahawk PHEV allows drivers to charge externally for extended electric-only range, making it significantly more efficient for daily urban commutes.

Electric Battle: MG Hector Tomahawk EV vs Mahindra XEV 9s

Transitioning to the zero-emission electric space, the Hector Tomahawk EV goes up against Mahindra’s futuristic XEV 9s. The Tomahawk EV comes equipped with a 69.2 kWh battery pack that generates 204 bhp and provides a claimed single-charge range of 517 km. It is designed to offer a comfortable, smooth, and practical electric driving experience for everyday family use.

Mahindra takes a more modular approach with the XEV 9s, offering buyers a choice of three distinct battery options: 59 kWh, 70 kWh, and a flagship 79 kWh pack. The top-spec 79 kWh variant delivers a powerful performance output of 286 bhp and an extended driving range of up to 679 km on a single charge. While the Tomahawk EV presents a strong overall package, the XEV 9s outpaces it in raw performance figures and peak driving range.

Price Comparison and Value Proposition

Pricing plays a critical role in defining the market positioning for these models. The MG Hector Tomahawk EV adopts an aggressive pricing strategy. When paired with MG’s Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) subscription model, the EV starts at an attractive Rs 13.9 lakh, accompanied by a battery rental fee of Rs 4.9 per kilometer. Without the BaaS program, the standalone price for the Hector Tomahawk EV starts at Rs 19.5 lakh. This makes it considerably more affordable than the Mahindra XEV 9s, which enters the market at a starting price of Rs 20.6 lakh.

In the hybrid segment, the pricing competition is far tighter. The Hector Tomahawk PHEV carries a starting price tag of Rs 25.7 lakh, placing it directly against the Toyota Innova Hycross hybrid, which starts at Rs 26 lakh. While both hybrid vehicles share a similar price point, the Tomahawk PHEV offers notably higher fuel efficiency and longer range capability. Overall, MG’s dual-powertrain strategy gives buyers distinct choices: a more budget-friendly EV option with solid range, or a competitively priced PHEV that sets new efficiency benchmarks against traditional hybrids.
