Washington, September 19, 2026: The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) has condemned US President Donald Trump’s decision to bar CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House, with WHCA President Jacqui Heinrich describing the move as a “ban on the free press.”
The statement followed Trump’s announcement that the three news organisations would be excluded from the White House. Trump has accused the outlets of publishing what he describes as “fake news” and of portraying his administration negatively.
WHCA Defends Press Freedom
In a statement issued on Friday, Heinrich said the Constitution protects the freedom of the press from government interference.
She argued that such protection should not depend on whether a president approves of a news organisation’s coverage, reporting or the questions asked by its journalists.
The WHCA said the issue goes beyond the rights of individual journalists and also concerns the public’s ability to receive independent information about the activities and decisions of the US government.
Association Supports CNN, MS NOW and Politico Journalists
The WHCA expressed support for journalists working for CNN, MS NOW and Politico, saying they were being singled out in connection with their work.
The association represents journalists covering the White House and has emphasised the importance of allowing reporters to independently cover the presidency.
Trump Defends the Decision
Trump has defended the restrictions, saying the three organisations had repeatedly published what he considers false or misleading coverage of his administration.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said other media organisations could also face restrictions. He did not provide detailed information in the announcement about how the ban would be implemented.
Reports said journalists from the affected organisations were still present at the White House after Trump’s announcement, while questions remained over the precise scope and implementation of the restrictions.
Debate Over First Amendment Rights
The development has triggered a wider debate in the United States over presidential press access and the First Amendment.
