Afghanistan Cricket Camp Hit by Sudden Health Scare

A major health scare struck the Afghanistan T20 World Cup contingent in New Delhi when a key support staff member suffered a sudden heart attack at the team hotel amid ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 fixtures. The incident has raised concerns as Afghanistan prepares for crucial matches ahead.

Incident Details and Immediate Medical Response

According to reports, the individual — identified as performance analyst KC Rama Subramanian — began experiencing severe chest pains on Wednesday while in the national capital. Team medical staff acted swiftly, administering first aid and rushing him to Fortis Hospital in New Delhi for urgent care.

At the hospital, doctors diagnosed a mild heart attack. Subramanian underwent an emergency angioplasty procedure — a surgery to restore blood flow in coronary arteries — and is currently stated to be out of danger. He remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) under close medical observation as he recovers.

Support From Team and Cricket Board

Senior members of the Afghanistan squad, including captain Rashid Khan and veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi, reportedly visited the hospital to check on his condition. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has requested privacy for Subramanian and his family during this difficult period.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have both communicated support to Afghanistan, ensuring the team receives the highest standard of medical assistance as the tournament progresses.

Impact on Afghanistan’s World Cup Campaign

Afghanistan’s T20 World Cup run has been challenging so far, with narrow defeats in early matches leaving them under pressure in Group D. After a loss to New Zealand and an unforgettable double Super Over thriller against South Africa, the team is fighting to stay alive in the competition.

With matches against the UAE and Canada upcoming, Afghanistan must secure big wins and improve their net run rate to keep Super 8 hopes alive. Regardless of on-field performance, the grim health scare has momentarily shifted focus as players rally around their colleague.
