Tension During Vijayadashami Procession
A major clash broke out at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi, on Thursday evening during the Durga idol immersion procession. Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) alleged that students linked to left-wing groups AISA, SFI, and DSF attacked participants of the immersion procession.
According to ABVP, students were manhandled, stones were pelted, and objectionable slogans were raised during the incident.
Peaceful Navratri, Chaos on Immersion Day
Reports highlight that the entire Navratri festival at JNU had been celebrated peacefully, with hundreds of students participating in religious and cultural events. However, tensions erupted during the immersion ceremony, adding another controversial chapter to the university’s long list of disputes.
ABVP Blames Leftist Groups for Provocation
ABVP leaders claimed that the attack was carried out deliberately to disturb the religious event. They alleged that JNU Students’ Union President Nitish Kumar instigated the violence and that Left groups shifted their “effigy burning program” near the T-point to deliberately clash with the immersion procession.
ABVP also accused left-wing groups of stone pelting on the idol and showing shoes and slippers to devotees during the procession.
Statements from ABVP Leaders
Mayank Panchal, ABVP JNU President, said:
“JNU has always celebrated diversity and cultural traditions. For ten days, students participated in Durga Puja with devotion, but Left organizations polluted this sacred event with violence and hatred. This is not just an attack on a religious festival, but on the faith and cultural harmony of the students. ABVP will not tolerate such aggression against cultural rights.”
Praveen Piyush, ABVP JNU Secretary, added:
“Today’s incident once again exposed the mindset of Left organizations. They neither respect students’ religious faith nor the peace of the campus. Attacking even girl students during a sacred immersion ceremony is shameful. We demand strict action against those responsible so that no group dares to disrupt students’ cultural rights in the future.”
Vaibhav Meena, JNUSU Joint Secretary, also condemned the incident:
“The way Left-wing goons carried out violence and even pelted stones at female students proves their hatred towards Indian culture and Hindu traditions. This is not just an attack on students, but also on the spirit of harmony within the university. The administration must act immediately to restore peace and cultural respect at JNU.”
No Police Complaint Yet
Despite the violent clashes, no police complaint has been filed so far. The incident has sparked a wave of condemnation and debate, with ABVP demanding strict action against the accused students from Left organizations.
