Terror Threat Alert in Delhi: Lashkar-e-Taiba Plot Targeting Chandni Chowk Temple

Date:

National capital Delhi is on high alert following fresh intelligence inputs suggesting a possible terrorist plot in the city. Security agencies have raised the alert level after receiving credible information that the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) may be planning an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) attack targeting crowded public areas, especially a prominent temple near Chandni Chowk and other sensitive locations such as the Red Fort vicinity.

Intelligence Input & Security Alert

According to multiple security sources and official briefings, the intelligence agencies have intercepted credible inputs indicating that LeT is plotting a significant attack in Delhi. Given the high footfall in Chandni Chowk — one of the city’s busiest markets and cultural hubs — the temple in this area is reportedly being eyed as a target. Authorities are treating the tip seriously due to its potential to cause mass casualties and widespread panic.

In response to the threat, the National Capital Region (NCR) has been placed on high alert, with central and state security forces on heightened vigilance. Delhi Police and central agencies have been directed to strengthen surveillance around historical sites, crowded markets, religious places, and transport hubs.

IED Threat & Possible Modus Operandi

The suspected plot reportedly involves the use of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). IEDs have been used in past terror attacks due to their ability to be concealed and detonated remotely or manually. Given the typical pattern of such attacks, security planners are working on multiple layers of protection to prevent any breach.

Past Attacks & Context

Delhi has faced terror incidents in the past, including the November 10, 2025 blast near the Red Fort, when a car bomb exploded in a parking zone killing and injuring several people. That attack underscored the vulnerability of high-traffic heritage and cultural zones. Security experts believe the current alert is partly informed by such historical precedents.

Furthermore, Lashkar-e-Taiba has been linked to multiple past terror incidents in India, including high-profile attacks targeting railways and historic monuments. Although the group often denies involvement, international agencies have repeatedly cited its operational footprints.

Security Measures & Public Advisory

Delhi Police has intensified patrols in markets, temples, and busy streets. Additional police personnel and paramilitary units have been deployed, and thousands of CCTV cameras are under continuous monitoring for any suspicious activity. Checkpoints and random friskings have been escalated.

Authorities are also urging the public to remain calm yet vigilant. People are advised to report suspicious objects, abandoned bags, or unusual behavior to law enforcement immediately. Public cooperation is considered critical in preventing possible attacks.

Strategic Focus on Heritage & Religious Sites

Historical and religious places such as Red Fort and Chandni Chowk temples are perceived to be high-risk targets due to their symbolic value and constant crowds. These areas attract both tourists and local visitors round-the-year, making them potential spots for maximizing terror impact.

International Dimensions

The alert follows a recent explosion at a mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan, on February 6, after which security agencies believe Let may be preparing retaliatory or larger operations. While the full nature of that incident is still under analysis, the timing has heightened concerns in Indian security circles.
