India and US Strengthen Economic Partnership: Jaishankar Meets US Treasury Secretary & Rubio

India’s Strategic Diplomatic Engagement in Washington

India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar held a series of high-level meetings in Washington, DC with senior US officials, including US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, to advance economic cooperation, strategic ties, and key global partnerships.

The meetings took place against the backdrop of India–US efforts to deepen bilateral relations, build resilient supply chains, expand trade and cooperation on critical minerals, and solidify ongoing strategic alignment in an evolving global environment.

Meeting with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent

On February 3, 2026, Dr. Jaishankar met with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in Washington, DC. Both leaders engaged in what Jaishankar described as a “productive discussion” focused on strengthening India-US economic partnership and strategic cooperation.

Secretary Bessent highlighted the importance of securing supply chains, ensuring economic and national security of mutual interest, and fostering deeper commercial collaboration between the two nations. Jaishankar echoed the need for policies and frameworks that support interdependent markets and resilient global supply networks.

This engagement exemplifies growing U.S.–India economic diplomacy as both sides work toward expanding trade, investment and cooperation across sectors including technology, energy and critical infrastructure.

Discussion with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio

Later the same day, Jaishankar met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the State Department. The two leaders welcomed the recently finalized India-US trade deal — which includes reduced reciprocal tariffs and stronger trade engagement — and discussed broad cooperation in critical minerals, energy security, and emerging technologies.

Rubio emphasised the shared goal to “unlock new economic opportunities between our two countries”, and both sides agreed on advancing bilateral cooperation on mineral exploration, mining, and processing — a key strategic focus amid global supply chain challenges.

Context and Strategic Implications

The series of meetings form part of Jaishankar’s official U.S. visit from February 2–4, 2026, during which he is also expected to attend the Critical Minerals Ministerial convened by the US. Strengthening supply chains for critical minerals and diversifying sources are central to economic resilience and global energy transition goals.

Both countries expressed optimism about building deeper economic engagement, enhancing mutual strategic interests, and fostering long-term cooperation across sectors including trade, defence, technology, and supply chain security.
