Israel and United States Launch Major Airstrikes on Iran as Middle East Conflict Escalates

Date:

Coordinated Military Strikes Reported Across Tehran and Other Cities

On February 28, 2026, Israel and the United States initiated large-scale military operations against multiple Iranian targets, marking one of the most significant escalations in decades of tensions between Tehran and Western powers. The strikes included coordinated airstrikes on Iranian military and government infrastructure, triggering explosions across the capital city of Tehran and several other urban centers.

Officials from both Washington and Jerusalem described the joint action as a pre-emptive effort to neutralize threats posed by Iran’s missile capabilities and alleged destabilizing activities in the region. Air raid sirens blared in Tehran as smoke and blasts were reported in residential and administrative districts.

Strategic Targets and Regional Impact

Reports indicate that the strikes were aimed at military bases, missile launch facilities, and intelligence sites across Iran, including locations in Tehran and several other major cities. While some online posts claimed the attack hit the residence of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, independent verification is lacking, and major international outlets have not confirmed this as an established fact.

Iran responded swiftly. Within hours, its armed forces launched a series of ballistic missiles and drones toward Israeli territory and several U.S. military bases across the Middle East, including sites in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia.

Leaders’ Statements and Military Alerts

Former U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking on the operation, described it as “major combat operations” and urged the Iranian people to oppose their government’s leadership, asserting the action aimed to reduce regional threats. Israeli officials echoed this stance, saying the offensive aimed at debilitating Iran’s military infrastructure.

Both Israel and Iran closed their airspace, and Israel declared a state of emergency amid fears of further retaliation and conflict escalation. Flights were grounded, businesses temporarily shut, and civilians advised to take shelter.

Regional and Global Reactions

The attacks prompted fear of a broader Middle East conflict. Governments worldwide monitored the situation, with many urging restraint. Airlines canceled flights over the region, and diplomatic officials reported rising concern about potential spillovers in neighboring Gulf countries.
