Donkey Meat, Milk and Ejiao Driving Demand
The survey highlights that donkey meat, milk, and Ejiao—a traditional gelatin made from donkey hides—are highly valued in China. These products are widely used in traditional medicine and health-related applications. As demand continues to rise, Pakistan sees an opportunity to establish itself as a supplier in this niche market.
Government Strengthens Trade Cooperation with China
To facilitate exports, Pakistan’s federal government has signed sanitary and trade protocols with China. Officials believe these agreements will help improve bilateral trade relations, attract foreign investment, and create employment opportunities in rural communities. The government expects the livestock sector to benefit significantly from this growing trade partnership.
New Slaughterhouse Approved in Gwadar
As part of the export expansion strategy, authorities have granted a new license to establish a donkey slaughterhouse in the Gwadar Free Zone. The facility will process donkey-related products for export to China. With the approval of this project, the number of licensed companies involved in the sector has increased, reflecting Pakistan’s commitment to developing the industry.
Donkey Population Continues to Grow
The Economic Survey also revealed a steady increase in Pakistan’s donkey population. The number of donkeys rose from approximately 6 million in 2024-25 to 6.2 million in 2025-26. Officials say the growing livestock population provides additional opportunities for exports while supporting rural livelihoods. Traditionally, donkeys play a crucial role in transporting crops, wood, fodder, and other goods in agricultural communities.
Economic Benefits and Future Prospects
Experts believe the export sector could become a valuable source of foreign exchange earnings for Pakistan. Increased demand from China may encourage investment in livestock infrastructure, processing facilities, and animal husbandry practices.
