Punjab Heat Wave Alert: Health Department Issues Advisory Amid Rising Temperatures

Date:

Rising Temperature Triggers Heat Wave Warning

Punjab is expected to witness a significant rise in temperature in the coming days, with the Meteorological Department issuing a heat wave alert across the state. Authorities have warned that temperatures may cross 40°C, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.

As heat wave conditions intensify, the Punjab Health Department has released a detailed advisory to help residents stay safe. Hospitals, civil surgeons, and community health centers have been instructed to remain fully prepared for emergencies.

Health Department Preparedness and Public Advisory

The government has directed all healthcare institutions to be on high alert. Special attention is being given to vulnerable groups such as children, elderly individuals, and outdoor workers.

A heat wave occurs when temperatures exceed 40°C, affecting the body’s ability to regulate heat and potentially leading to dehydration, heatstroke, and other serious conditions.

Officials emphasized the importance of awareness and preventive measures to reduce health risks during extreme weather conditions.

Precautions to Stay Safe During Heat Wave

Residents are advised to follow simple but effective precautions:

  • Drink water every 20–30 minutes, even if not thirsty
  • Consume ORS, lemon water, and traditional drinks like lassi
  • Wear loose, light-colored cotton clothes
  • Cover your head using a hat, umbrella, or cloth
  • Avoid outdoor work during peak afternoon hours
  • Eat water-rich fruits such as watermelon, cucumber, and oranges
  • Ensure proper ventilation indoors using fans and curtains
  • Employers should provide shade and water to outdoor workers

What to Avoid During Extreme Heat

To minimize the risk of heat-related illness, people should avoid:

  • Going outside between 12 PM and 3 PM
  • Consuming excessive tea, coffee, alcohol, or soft drinks
  • Leaving children or pets inside parked vehicles
  • Performing heavy physical work during peak heat hours

Conclusion

With temperatures expected to rise further, authorities urge residents to stay alert and follow safety guidelines. Proper hydration, avoiding direct sunlight, and taking timely precautions can significantly reduce health risks during the ongoing heat wave.
