Russia Hits Back at Trump’s Claim: Stop Lying… India Will Never Halt Russian Oil Purchases — India Also Responds Strongly

Date:

Russia has strongly rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that India has promised to stop buying oil from Russia. The Russian Foreign Ministry called Trump’s statement “false and misleading,” reaffirming that Russian oil exports to India will continue as usual. Moscow emphasized that the energy partnership between Russia and India is “strong and long-term,” and will not be affected by any third-country pressure. The ministry further stated that Russian oil plays a vital role in supporting India’s economic growth and both nations will continue to strengthen their energy cooperation.

Trump’s Statement: “Modi Assured Me India Will Stop Buying Russian Oil”

During a media interaction in the Oval Office, U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured him that India would gradually stop purchasing oil from Russia. Trump described this as an important step toward curbing Moscow’s military actions in Ukraine. He added that while India might not immediately end imports, the process had begun. Trump further urged China to follow suit and stop buying Russian oil.

India’s Strong Response: “Our Energy Policy Serves National Interest”

Reacting promptly to Trump’s remarks, the Indian government issued a firm statement defending its independent energy policy. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) clarified that India’s energy decisions are guided solely by the interests of its citizens and consumers, not by external influence. The MEA emphasized that India makes sovereign and balanced choices, and that oil imports from Russia remain a critical component of India’s strategic energy security.

Russia-India Energy Ties Remain Unshaken

Despite growing geopolitical tensions, both Moscow and New Delhi continue to maintain close cooperation in the energy sector. India has been among the largest importers of discounted Russian crude oil, which has helped the nation manage inflation and ensure affordable energy for its citizens. Both countries have reiterated their commitment to strengthening mutual trust and energy collaboration in the coming years.
