Modern High-Comfort Sleeper Train for Long-Distance Travelers
Punjab residents are in for a special travel upgrade — the Indian Railways is preparing to introduce the modern Vande Bharat Sleeper Train on the Delhi–Amritsar route. This announcement was made by Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu, during a railway bridge foundation ceremony near Doraha in the Ludhiana district.
The decision to launch this premium sleeper train aims to provide comfortable, fast, and modern long-distance travel for passengers. This sleeper variant will expand the Vande Bharat family beyond the existing chair-car services, opening up new possibilities for overnight journeys.
Route, Facilities and Connectivity
According to the railways ministry, the proposed sleeper train will start between Delhi and Amritsar, passing through key junctions such as Chandigarh, Ludhiana, and Jalandhar. This will significantly improve connectivity between Punjab’s main cities and the national capital region.
To enable operations, the railways has identified land near Ladowal for a locomotive shed — an important support facility for maintenance and train turnaround.
Inside the train, passengers can expect modern amenities such as:
- Comfortable sleeping berths for overnight travel
- Sensor-based lighting systems
- Bio-vacuum toilets
- Automatic doors
- Multiple charging points
- Advanced safety systems including Kavach anti-collision technology
Speed, Comfort and Future Expansion
The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is designed to run at speeds of up to 160 km/h, offering journey times competitive with existing premium trains. The railways authority has stated that similar sleeper services may be launched on other busy routes across the country in the future, potentially including long-distance corridors like Delhi–Srinagar.
This initiative marks another step in modernizing Indian Railways for long-distance travel by providing high-comfort options that rival conventional overnight trains.
