Iran Not Out of FIFA World Cup 2026: AFC Clarifies Amid Withdrawal Rumors

Confusion Over Iran’s Participation in World Cup 2026

Rumors about Iran being out of the FIFA World Cup 2026 recently spread across global media and social platforms. The speculation started after comments from Iran’s sports ministry suggested that the country might not participate due to geopolitical tensions and security concerns.

However, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has now officially clarified the situation. According to AFC officials, they have not received any formal communication from Iran indicating that the team will withdraw from the tournament. As a result, Iran remains on track to compete in the upcoming World Cup scheduled to take place in North America.

Political Tensions Spark Withdrawal Speculation

The controversy began when Iran’s Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali publicly stated that participating in the World Cup might be “impossible” due to escalating geopolitical tensions. These tensions reportedly escalated following military conflicts involving the United States and its allies, which significantly worsened relations between the countries.

The minister argued that the safety of players and the national delegation could not be guaranteed under such circumstances. His comments quickly triggered speculation that Iran might boycott the tournament entirely.

This development drew widespread attention because the World Cup will be jointly hosted by United States, Canada, and Mexico from June to July 2026, meaning Iran would have to travel and compete primarily on North American soil.

AFC Breaks Silence on Iran’s Status

Following growing confusion, the AFC issued a statement to clarify that Iran’s football federation has not officially notified the governing body of any withdrawal decision.

AFC officials emphasized that participation decisions can only be made by the national football federation and FIFA, not by external political statements or speculation.

According to the governing body, Iran’s football federation has reaffirmed its intention to continue preparations for the World Cup campaign. This means that, as of now, Iran is still part of the tournament lineup.

Iran’s Group Stage Schedule

Iran, currently ranked among the top football teams in Asia, has already secured qualification for the tournament. The team is scheduled to play all of its group-stage matches in the United States.

Reports indicate that the matches will take place in cities such as Inglewood, California, and Seattle, Washington. These games are expected to attract large crowds and significant international attention.

What Happens If Iran Withdraws?

If Iran were to officially withdraw from the tournament at a later stage, it could face severe consequences under FIFA regulations. These penalties may include heavy financial fines and even bans from future World Cup competitions.

In addition, FIFA would need to urgently select a replacement team to fill Iran’s place in the tournament, which could complicate tournament scheduling and logistics.

For now, however, there is no official withdrawal announcement, and preparations for Iran’s participation continue as planned.
