India’s Fuel Reserves Strong Despite Global Tensions
The Government of India has assured citizens that there is no immediate risk of shortages of petrol, diesel, or cooking gas despite the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the country currently holds enough crude oil and LNG reserves to last for 60 days, along with LPG stocks sufficient for approximately 45 days.
The statement comes at a time when global energy markets are under pressure due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly concerns surrounding shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.
No Need for Panic Buying
Minister Puri emphasized that Indian consumers should not worry about any disruption in fuel supply. He clarified that the country has built a strong inventory and diversified import sources to ensure uninterrupted access to essential fuels.
According to the minister, oil marketing companies and government agencies are working closely to monitor international developments and maintain adequate stock levels across the country.
The government’s assurance is expected to calm fears among households and businesses that rely heavily on LPG and petroleum products for daily operations.
Oil Companies Facing Heavy Financial Pressure
While fuel supplies remain stable, oil marketing companies are under significant financial strain. Minister Puri revealed that state-run fuel retailers are losing nearly ₹1,000 crore every day due to elevated global crude oil prices and controlled domestic fuel rates.
He estimated that quarterly losses could approach ₹1 lakh crore if market conditions remain volatile.
Despite these losses, the government has not announced any immediate changes to retail prices, prioritizing inflation control and consumer stability.
Impact of the US-Israel-Iran Conflict
The current crisis in West Asia has raised concerns worldwide about energy security. The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, handles a substantial share of global oil and LNG shipments.
Any disruption in this region can lead to higher fuel prices and supply uncertainties. However, India has proactively secured supplies from multiple countries and maintained strategic reserves to reduce dependency on any single source.
This preparedness has enabled the country to withstand international shocks without affecting domestic fuel availability.
Government Monitoring the Situation Closely
Officials have stated that they are continuously reviewing global developments and coordinating with refiners and distributors. Strategic petroleum reserves and storage facilities are being used to ensure consistent supply.
The government’s message is clear: India has sufficient fuel reserves, and citizens do not need to panic or hoard LPG cylinders or petroleum products.
