West Bengal Government Approves Land Transfer for Border Fencing
The newly formed government in West Bengal has announced a major decision to speed up fencing along the India–Bangladesh border. In its first cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said that all land required by the Border Security Force (BSF) will be transferred to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs within 45 days.
The decision is aimed at completing fencing along the remaining unfenced stretches of the border, which Indian authorities say is necessary to strengthen national security and prevent illegal infiltration.
Bangladesh Says It Cannot Be Intimidated
The announcement drew a strong reaction from Dhaka. Humaiun Kobir, foreign affairs adviser to Bangladesh’s Prime Minister, stated that Bangladesh “cannot be intimidated by barbed wire.”
According to Bangladeshi officials, while every country has the right to protect its borders, such moves should not be used to pressure or threaten neighboring nations. The statement reflects growing concerns in Dhaka over recent political developments and tougher rhetoric surrounding border security.
Border Force Put on Alert
Following the remarks, Bangladesh placed its border force, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), on heightened alert. Officials said the step was precautionary and intended to ensure vigilance along the shared border.
India and Bangladesh share a border of more than 4,000 kilometers, making it one of the longest international borders in the world. The region has long been sensitive due to issues such as illegal immigration, cattle smuggling, and occasional border tensions.
Political Context Behind the Decision
The border fencing move comes after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) formed a government in West Bengal. During the election campaign, Union Home Minister Amit Shah repeatedly promised to complete the fencing and take stricter action against illegal immigration.
Suvendu Adhikari accused the previous administration of delaying land transfer needed for fencing, alleging that the issue had been ignored for political reasons. The new government has positioned the project as a top priority.
Impact on India-Bangladesh Relations
Although India and Bangladesh maintain strong diplomatic and economic ties, border-related issues remain sensitive. Dhaka’s response suggests that Bangladesh wants to ensure security measures do not negatively affect bilateral relations.
Experts believe both countries will continue dialogue to avoid unnecessary tensions while addressing border concerns through diplomatic channels.
Conclusion
The West Bengal government’s decision to accelerate border fencing has triggered a strong reaction from Bangladesh, which has made it clear that it will not be intimidated by barbed wire barriers. With Bangladesh placing its border force on alert, the development highlights the delicate balance between national security and regional diplomacy.
