Five IAF Personnel Killed in AN-32 Crash at Assam’s Jorhat Air Base, Probe Ordered

Date:

Tragic Accident During Routine Sortie

A tragic accident struck the Indian Air Force (IAF) on Saturday when an AN-32 transport aircraft crashed while attempting to land at the Jorhat Air Force Station in Assam. The incident claimed the lives of five Air Force personnel and has once again highlighted the risks associated with military aviation operations.

According to official information, the aircraft was undertaking a routine sortie when the accident occurred near the air base. Emergency response teams rushed to the site immediately after the crash, while rescue and recovery operations were launched without delay.

Five Air Warriors Lose Their Lives

The Indian Air Force confirmed that five personnel onboard the aircraft lost their lives in the crash. The deceased included officers and air warriors who were serving the nation through critical operational duties.

The loss has sent shockwaves across the defence community and prompted condolences from senior government leaders, military officials, and citizens across the country.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed deep sorrow over the incident and paid tribute to the personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of the nation.

Co-Pilot Survives, Undergoing Treatment

While five personnel died in the crash, officials confirmed that the co-pilot survived the accident. He was rescued from the wreckage and immediately shifted for medical treatment.

Authorities have not released detailed information regarding his condition, but officials stated that he is receiving necessary medical care and remains under observation.

His survival is being seen as a critical development that may help investigators understand the sequence of events leading up to the crash.

Court of Inquiry Ordered

Soon after the accident, the Indian Air Force ordered a Court of Inquiry to determine the exact cause of the crash.

Investigators will examine technical records, maintenance logs, flight data, weather conditions, and operational procedures. The inquiry is expected to determine whether mechanical failure, operational factors, or other circumstances contributed to the accident.

Military aviation experts note that such investigations are essential to improve safety standards and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Importance of the AN-32 Fleet

The AN-32 transport aircraft remains one of the Indian Air Force’s most important logistical assets. The aircraft is widely used for transporting troops, equipment, supplies, and humanitarian assistance, particularly in remote and high-altitude regions of the country.

Its ability to operate from challenging airfields has made it a vital component of India’s military transport network, especially in the northeastern states and border areas.

Despite its proven operational record, the AN-32 fleet has experienced several accidents over the years, leading to ongoing modernization and safety enhancement efforts.

Nation Mourns the Loss

As news of the crash spread, tributes poured in from across the country. The Indian Air Force expressed condolences to the bereaved families and assured them of full support during this difficult time.

The sacrifice of the fallen personnel serves as a reminder of the dedication and courage displayed daily by India’s armed forces while carrying out critical missions under demanding conditions.

The inquiry findings are expected to provide greater clarity regarding the circumstances that led to the accident and may help strengthen future aviation safety measures.
