Bangladesh Rejects India’s Explanation on PM Adviser’s Delhi Airport Row, Calls It ‘Unsatisfactory’

Diplomatic Tensions Escalate Between Dhaka and New Delhi

Diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and India faced a fresh hurdle after Dhaka rejected New Delhi’s official clarification regarding the detention of Zahed Ur Rahman, the Adviser for Information and Strategy to Prime Minister. The state-run Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) news agency reported that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka officially categorized India’s response to the incident as entirely “unsatisfactory.” The standoff highlights growing friction over cross-border diplomatic protocols and the treatment of high-ranking state officials at international transit hubs.

The Indira Gandhi International Airport Incident

The controversy unfolded at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). Zahed Ur Rahman arrived in the Indian capital to lead a high-profile Bangladeshi state delegation. Despite traveling on an official diplomatic mission, he was abruptly stopped and aggressively questioned by Indian immigration authorities. According to reports, the immigration officials intercepted the Prime Minister’s adviser because his name allegedly matched an active security-related blacklist maintained by Indian intelligence agencies. This security check led to an extended delay, triggering immediate diplomatic protests from the Bangladeshi side.

Dhaka Calls Out Breach of Advance Diplomatic Protocols

A senior spokesperson for the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry expressed deep regret over the handling of the situation, labeling the entire sequence of events as “unfortunate and regrettable.” Dhaka emphasized that the Indian authorities had been thoroughly briefed well in advance about the adviser’s arrival. Formal diplomatic communications had been routed through established channels, clearly stating that Rahman would be entering the country to head the official delegation at a key multilateral summit. The ministry pointed out that standard international protocols for visiting state dignitaries were bypassed during the encounter.

India’s Stance: Security Screening vs. Voluntary Return

The public backlash from Dhaka comes shortly after India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) attempted to downplay the incident. In a weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that Zahed Ur Rahman arrived on a private passport carrying a valid SAARC visa to participate in the 28th Meeting of the Committee of Senior Officials of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA). Jaiswal maintained that immigration officials merely conducted a routine query to reconfirm the explicit purpose of his visit. The MEA asserted that Rahman was granted full authorization to enter India following the quick verification, but he chose to board a flight back to Dhaka entirely of his own volition.

The Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Context

The diplomatic row cast a shadow over the 28th meeting of the Committee of Senior Officials of the Indian Ocean Rim Association, which was hosted by India’s External Affairs Ministry in New Delhi. The vital multilateral event focused on regional maritime safety, trade facilitation, and blue economy collaborations across the Indian Ocean footprint. Because of the airport confrontation, the top adviser chose not to attend the scheduled sessions, leaving the Bangladeshi delegation without its designated leadership during critical regional policy discussions.

Deepening Strain on India-Bangladesh Bilateral Ties

This incident introduces a complex layer of tension to the bilateral ties between the neighboring South Asian nations. While India and Bangladesh have historically shared close security and economic partnerships, the handling of top-tier political executives at transit points remains a highly sensitive issue. Security analysts suggest that the presence of senior foreign dignitaries on security watchlists points toward deeper bureaucratic miscommunications or intelligence lapses that both nations need to address to avoid long-term diplomatic fallout.
