FIFA Slams Argentina with Severe Bans and Heavy Fines Following Explosive World Cup Final Brawl

Date:

FIFA has handed down massive disciplinary penalties against Argentina following a chaotic brawl that erupted at the conclusion of the World Cup final against Spain. Midfielder Leandro Paredes has been hit with a 10-match ban, while defender Nahuel Molina received a seven-match suspension. The governing body’s decisive ruling reflects a strict zero-tolerance stance toward post-match violence and misconduct on football’s biggest stage.

Heated Post-Match Altercation Triggers Major Suspensions

The ugly scenes unfolded immediately after the final whistle on July 19, when Spain secured a tense 1-0 victory over Argentina after extra time. Tensions boiled over when Leandro Paredes shoved Spanish substitute Gavi as Spain’s bench rushed onto the pitch to celebrate their World Cup victory. The initial push triggered a massive pitchside altercation involving players, substitutes, and technical staff from both sides.

Following a thorough investigation, FIFA charged Paredes with three counts of assault, resulting in the longest suspension of the tournament—a 10-match international ban alongside a $90,000 fine. Molina was charged with two counts of assault (one completed and one attempted), earning him a seven-match suspension and an identical $90,000 fine. Assistant coach Roberto Ayala was handed a three-match suspension and a $30,000 fine after issuing a public apology for his role in the fracas. Additionally, Thiago Almada and Spain’s Gavi each received one-match bans and $30,000 fines for their involvement.

AFA Hit with $321,000 Fine and Stadium Capacity Restrictions

The sanctions extend far beyond individual players. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) was hit with a total fine of $321,000 due to multiple organizational and fan-related breaches committed throughout the tournament. FIFA explicitly cited team misconduct, pitch security failures, non-sporting demonstrations, and discriminatory chants by supporters during Argentina’s World Cup campaign.

A primary contributing factor to the organizational penalty was the display of a political banner reading “Las Malvinas Son Argentinas” by team members following their semi-final triumph over England. As part of the disciplinary package, Argentina must play their next two home international matches with stadium capacity capped at 50%. Furthermore, FIFA mandated that $100,000 of the total monetary fine be directly invested into anti-discrimination educational programs within Argentine football. However, FIFA suspended part of the punishment—including one stadium capacity restriction match and $100,000 of the fine—subject to a successful probationary period.

Argentine Football Association Prepares Court Appeal

The heavy penalties have caused significant outrage within Argentine football circles, prompting the AFA to prepare a formal legal response. Officials from the governing body have formally requested the detailed rationale behind FIFA’s disciplinary board rulings to evaluate their options for an official appeal.

Argentine football executives have indicated that if the internal FIFA appeal process fails to reduce the length of the suspensions for key players, they are fully prepared to escalate the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne. With international qualifiers approaching, losing key starters like Paredes and Molina for extended periods presents a major challenge for the national team’s operational setup.
