A Festival Celebrating the Bond of Siblings
Bhai Dooj is celebrated every year on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya as a symbol of love, protection, and blessings between brothers and sisters. Performing the Bhai Dooj Vrat Katha on this day is believed to bring good fortune, prosperity, and freedom from fear of Yama (the God of Death).
Why Bhai Dooj is Important
This year, the festival falls on 23 October, Thursday. According to beliefs, listening to or reading the Bhai Dooj Vrat Katha brings divine blessings and strengthens the sacred bond of siblings.
Legend of Yamraj and Goddess Yamuna
Once, Yamraj wished to meet his sister Yamuna. Despite searching, his messengers couldn’t find her. Finally, on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, Yamraj met Yamuna, who welcomed him with great affection and served him a meal. Deeply touched by her love, he offered her a boon.
The Divine Blessing
Yamuna asked that anyone who bathes in her holy waters should be free from the torments of Yamalok. Yamraj granted this blessing. Since then, the day has also been known as Yam Dwitiya.
Traditions Originated from This Day
Yamraj declared that disrespecting a sister would lead to punishment in Yamalok. But bathing in Yamuna and offering water to the Sun would ensure heaven. This tradition continues as brothers visit their sisters, apply tilak, and exchange gifts.
Mention in Matsya Purana
The Matsya Purana states that worshipping Yamraj on this day removes the fear of untimely death and grants freedom from sins.
Special Celebrations in Braj Region
In Braj, sisters bathe with their brothers in Yamuna River for prosperity. Giving gifts or Dakshina on this day removes obstacles and brings strength, wealth, and wisdom.
Importance of Deepdan
Lighting a Deepdan with four lamps outside the house in the evening brings peace and prosperity to the home.
Message of Bhai Dooj
This festival reminds us that love, respect, and togetherness between siblings bring lifelong happiness, success, and blessings.
